Z06 - Viper - Evo9 Track Vid Clip
Had the opportunity to instruct in a (black) C6 Z06 with Hoosier DOT slicks. It was the fastest car on the track...actually faster than a near-race-prep '05 Z06 (yellow). Definitely the fastest car I have ever been in.
It walked a new Viper on the front straight, and passed an Evo9 (gray) on the back. Here's a little (11 MB) video clip of some of the action.
The whistling noise must be the cut-outs. ?

You really closed in fast on the rally car in that one turn, must've shocked him (he must be going , damned Z06s! ). I've always said the only thing keeping those beasts from being pure race cars is the rubber compound!! You've proved that, good job!!

It was great going from car to car and seeing the differences. Didn't rotate to the Viper...too bad. That would have been an interesting comparison. But, I guess the front straight told the story there.
BTW, passing was only allowed on the straights in this group. The Viper had a good run coming out of the last turn, but the Z powered on by.

Looks like fun. I assume that is the track up in Reno? What kind of lap times was the new Z06 running?
I can't wait to get my LS7/FD running later this year. 2800lbs/600rwhp+

And FWIW, they would give a stock LS1 a good race, especially if the drivers are good...
They are both low 13 second cars pending they have a good driver behind the wheel

Awesome video. Where I live, in the hilly regions of CT, a rally car was my top choice, except for the $30k+ sticker of the STi I wanted. My Z28 was 1/2 that w/ 32k miles Thats some gross vehicle weight savings right there.

Well, as we all know, "fast" is a relative term:
Is the Evo-IX as fast in a straight line as a Z06? Nope!
Are they as fast around the corners? If the corner is less than 40 mph, probably as fast, or faster. The Evo has a computer controlled 4-wheel diff. If the corner is 40 to 75 mph, probably as fast given that they are 4x4 and can use similar rubber. Above 75 mph and their suspension shows signs of weakness (which could probably be fixed with aftermarket goodies).
The Z06 is probably about the same wet-weight, has wider tires, deliveres better high-speed suspension response and predictability (between the two cars this Sunday), more grunt, and probably a better aero package.
Please keep in mind that I only had 20 minutes in each, but that was my experience.

Evo's are around 3200-3300lbs. With a straight pipe, air filter, boost controller, and exhaust they can run low 12's if not high 11's with high octane fuel on the stock turbo. Beyond that is where it starts to get very very pricey.
Beyond 400hp or so the WRX Sti engine is a ticking timebomb. The Evo engine is a very strong factory motor and can handle lots of boost.
I had a modified Sti I raced against in a NASA Time Trial group and I couldn't pull him on the straights. I would gain some ground in the high speed corners/S's. It was very very quick. Around corners in my rear view mirror he was smoking all 4 tires. After a few laps of holding him off I messed up and put 2 tires off the course and had to let him pass. I spent the rest of the session on his *ss but could not pass him.
Here is the car: http://socal.nasa-tt.com/Warr.html
He must've had nitrous on the car or making a lot more power because I am making a little over 500hp at the flywheel and am 600lbs lighter. My car: http://norcal.nasa-tt.com/corbett-info.html

i got chills watching that video. that new Z06 is an amazing car from the factory. well worth the money in comparison to the Viper, escpecially after seeing this video. the driver in the viper had his foot slammed to the ground you can tell by the way both cars were moving. for now ill stick with my '04 Z06 and the 403ci that is going in. i plan on going to the track and racing against the president of my company, he thinks his 996 S4 is all that. hoosiers are the chit though! that would be my road race tire choice!
