Default Track Results - H/C M6 SS.... Have Questions

UPDATE: Back in Jan of 2010 the gentleman I sold the car to swapped the gear to a 4.30 and went back to the track. He ran a 11.44 @ 122 mph with a crappy 60'! He had too much air in the tires (20 psi). With a decent 60' the car has 11.2Xs in it easy... which is a great time for a heads/cam/intake full weight M6 Camaro SS with cats and that passes emissions...

Keep in mind that this new time was ran at Commerce which is at 1002' of elevation... over 500' higher than when I ran the car at Silver Dollar... So, correcting the 11.44 @ 122 to sea level would be ~ 11.29 @ 123mph. And again, the 11.44 was ran on a tire with way too much air and an amateur driver...

I took my SS to the track for the first time today. It has been a long time coming...

Here are some details:

Racetrack:

429' Elevation
73.9* Air Temp
30.0 inches/Hg
50.0* Dew Point

DA = 1559

Weight:

3,435 lbs (no driver)

3,650 lbs race-weight (I need to lose some weight myself)

I have done no weight reduction except for the drag pack. The spare tire was even in he car.

Times:

Best ET: 11.62

Best MPH: 120.2

Best 60': 1.68

Best Pass: 11.65 @ 120.2 mph w/ 1.75 60'. The corrected time for sea level for this pass is 11.42 @ 122 mph.

Here are a few comments/quesitons:

1. I'm currently running a 3.70:1 gear in my 9". I feel that this is too much of a street gear and I'm leaning towards a 4.30:1 for better track times.

I'm running a 26" M&H cheater slick and from what I can calculate I'd be right at 6,800 @ 122mph - can someone please confirm this?

2. I forgot to disconnect the front sway bar. Do you think my 60' suffered as a result?

3. I'm running a 16x8 V6 wheel in the back with the 26x11.5x16 M&H. I think that changing to a 10" wide wheel would help increase the contact patch and help lower the 60'. Can someone confirm this?

4. I think running a 2-step would help me be more consistent with the launch and help lower my 60'.

What do you think? And does anyone make a plug-n-play 2-step for our cars?

5. Short belt.

I had a buddy at the track tell me that bypassing the power steering pump can save 1-2 tenths and increase mph by 1-2.

Can someone confirm this?

All-in-all I'm quite happy for my first visit to the track. I feel that tweaking the suspension will even help as I was just winging the adjustments and there to have fun mostly.

Thanks for your help guys.

I would think thats about right (6800) with 4.30s & a 26" tire @ 122, i trapped @ 6100 with 4.11s @ 115 with a 25.8" tire.

Yes sir, they are. And with a 1-1/4" spacer.

And they are wrapped with a M&H Racemaster... not the stock crap.

The only rubbing I got was when I let them down to 15 psi and was making a turn towards the staging lanes.... but going down the track - zero rubbing.

So what about the suspension can I improve on?

Did having the sway bar connected hurt? And if so, how much can I gain my disconnecting it?

Also, I have Strange SA on all corners. I was running a 5 setting in the back and 4 setting up front.... any thoughts on that?

Thanks guys.

How much did those rims cost you?

I plan to do a complete write-up on the drag pack. Including the weight savings over my stock ZR1s, cost of the wheels/tires, etc.

So, I'll update you with a link to the thread with all the details... should be up sometime tonight.

the sway bar will help a lil.

short belt will help a lil, not 1-2 and not 1-2 mph.

whats your stall? are you flashing or going off idle?

i would think that you should be able to hit 1.5x

what sus do you have?

you have good mph just not getting out of the hole quick enough, a 4.30 will help but itll be horrible on the street.

congrats

first off looks good man.
1. if you plan to go any faster leave that gear in it. i have a 4.10 and need to step down. if no then ya put more gear out back.
2. it didnt hurt that much. a little maybe but it wouldnt have made any huge diff.
3. a wider rim isnt going to help you as much as more sidewall. i.e. a 15" rim. the more sidewall to wrinkle the more bite you will get.
4. i have a synergy 2 step (not plug and play) and wouldnt ever take it off. way better to launch a 6 spd car and very consistant. i made 3 hot lap passes a month back and each one was a 1.547. and my suspension sptill needs some adjusting.
5. no leave the belt alone. only benefit imo is its easier to keep the car straight without the power steering going down the track.

overall id be very happy. weather conditions looked good. now that you have a good baseline you can tweak from here. put as much air in the tire as it will take and still hook. it will help you down the track. also its hard to say to adjust shock settings without seeing how the car will react. you want the rear to stay fairly level when it leaves and pushes the axle down and you dont want the front so loose as it hops. you want it to come up and stay there then level out as it goes down the track.

Thanks man.

The car is a M6.

I'm running Strange SA on all corners, 325 lb front springs (Strange by Hypercoil), BMR 1" lowering springs in the rear.

The 4.30 shouldn't be too bad since I have (2) overdrives.

Thanks for the response Tommy.

1. I'd like to maximize the motor I have now, so I plan to swap the gears and of course keep the 3.70s for when/if a stroker motor goes in.

2. Good to know because I was thinking about taking it off completely to save a little weight. I'll just keep in on and disconnect it next time I take her to the track. I was a little rushed this trip so I forgot...

3. I was affraid you'd say that. I didn't want to grind the calipers, so I went with a 16" rear. Does anyone make a caliper friendly 15" wheel?

By the way, I have to run a 17" wheel on the front due to the larger C5 rotors.

4. Thanks for the info. Do you have a shift light as well?

5. 10-4, the belt will stay. After all, this is a street car.

billet specialties and bogart are both direct fit. the new weld r/t's might be im not sure but they are pricey. and both bs and bogart can make a 17" front rim also. yes i have a raptor shift light.

I didn't want to spend the Bogart money...

And I'm in love with a black wheel on this car...

Does Billet Specialties make a black affordable wheel?

The launch rpm varied... but mostly was around 5k....

This is why I need a 2 step.... so I can just mat the right pedal and launch!

TFS heads, TFS stage 3 cam by Lunati. It's a small cam... very docile if you ask me.... and to top it off, the car has cats.... passed emissions the other day. lol
