Default Smaller tires in rear than up front, is this safe?

I came across a good deal on a set of 16" Trans Am wheels and brand new 255/50/16 ET Streets. I don't have any front runners yet, so for now I'm stuck with a couple 275/40/17 Nitto 555's on the front. Is it safe to have the rear tire be that much smaller than the front? Should I wait until I can get some smaller front runners before I take it to the track?

The rears are taller, you should be okay. Gonna have some good rolling resistance in the front with those wide meaty tires!

It looks weird that's for sure! Once my taxes come back I'll be able to spring for some smaller wheels and tires.

I've seen people run the spares tires out of GTOs for front skinnys. Got a friend at a junk yard?

Ah, good catch. They're not the 555r's, they're the all season 555's. I've been researching tires so much I guess I just got use to typing 555r.

You will be fine. The O/D should be on par, just more sidewall for the rear.

It may "look" weird but you will be fine.
