Pepper runs a new BEST.
In the last few months, I have blown up my motor, experimented with a new converter, and done all sorts of things to the car…. And I had squat to show for it. To make matters worse, I had loaned a buddy my TP4400 last Friday with the warning that if this new converter I was using didn’t work out, I would want my TP4400 back. He came and got the TP4400 and installed it THAT same day. I went to the track the next Sunday…and came to the conclusion that the converter in the car (Yank UT4800) was just not right for my combo. So I had to break the news to my bud that I needed my “verter back. Happy he was NOT.
But we pulled it back out of his car Wednesday night and hooked him back up with his ST3500. The next day (Thursday) I dropped my tranny and pulled out the UT4800 and installed the TP4400. Well I almost finished installing the tranny. Today when I got home from work, I finished up the install and loaded up for bear.
Pulled out the passenger seat. Topped off the tranny fluid and drove the car out to the track. I was kind of worried about the fact that in dropping the tranny I had to disconnect the battery. And this meant the car had to relearn all the “little things” again. *sigh* I was really hoping it wouldn’t hurt me too much at the track. I never got the chance to “get on it” on the way to the track. So my first pass down the ¼ mile would be the cars only learning time. So be it… (Fingers crossed and praying like a nun on Sunday)
The good news was that HRP is having a “pro-mod” shoot out this weekend, so the track was prepped VERY well.
The weather? It was AWESOME. Dry and cool. Crowded at the track? Nah, it was barren of folks at 6 p.m. I got to work after arriving at the track and swapped the Nittos for some “Real “ tires. My MT E.T. Drags, 26”x10”x 15’s mounted on Welds. Once that was done I rolled up to the pits and checked the tire pressure. Rears at 14 psi and the fronts at 44. Everything looked/sounded good on the drive over from the house to the track… but I checked my tranny fluid and oil one more time. They were fine so I got in line and prepared myself for the run. I kept double checking everything in my mind again and again. I couldn’t think of anything I had forgotten…well, I still haven’t adjusted my shift points or had the LS1 Edit, tuning done to the car. But Jayson at MTI has been busy with other folk’s cars the past few days. My turn will come I guess, anyways, finally it was my turn to make a pass.
The motor felt good during the burnout and once I got some good smoke from the Mickey’s I staged. (I staged too dang deep, dangit)
The pass was a good first effort of:
60’ 1.441
330’ 4.349
1/8 6.859
mph 97.93
1000’ 9.038
¼ 10.887
mph 121.54
Man that felt good. Especially that 60’. I at that point was assured that going back to the TP4400 was a GOOD idea. I needed a few more passes to be sure. But on the surface it was looking like a wise choice.
I weighed the car with me in it. 3212 lbs.
Launch RPM? 3600 rpm’s.
I came back around to the pits and jacked the car up and removed my muffler. I wanted to see how much it would be worth.
The result of the weight savings?
60’ 1.447
330’ 4.352
1/8 6.84
mph 98.56
1000’ 9.009
¼ e.t. 10.845
mph 122.38
Hmmmm… while it WAS an improvement I wanted to see how hot lapping would affect the times so I drove right back around and 15 minutes later I ran the car again. The run broke down as follows.
60’ 1.426
330’ 4.327
1/8 6.814
mph 98.98
1000’ 8.970
¼ e.t. 10.800
mph 122.67
Kick ***, my mph was coming up! And that 60’ was rocking the house. Not too shabby of times for a Yank 4L60E (IMO). Man I was praising Jesus and thanking the Lord for the HUGE blessings he was heaping upon me. That E.T. was just stunning to me. I just could not believe it. Of course I had to listen to the “nitrous accusations” as usual once I was back in the pits, but all in all? I think folks are starting to take these LS1’s for serious. The “NAW’S” comments have been getting fewer and fewer…
But how was I going to improve my times now? After letting the pepper sit for an hour to cool off. I played with the tire pressure and lowered the launch RPM to 3300.
The ambient temp was also dropping like a stone at HRP.
An hour later I pulled up to the lights after some buddies of mine pushed me through the lines.
The result? Ya’ ready?
60’ 1.381
330’ 4.254
1/8 6.724
mph 99.57
1000’ 8.866
¼ e.t. 10.683
mph 123.58
To say I was stunned is an understatement. I could hardly believe the time slip. A Freaking 10.68? And a 1.3 60’? LOL.
All glory to God. Thank you Lord, thank you, thank you. I hit my knees and gave thanks again and again. I must be living right or doing SOMETHING right for him to bless me so. A 10.6 is just too much. Needless to say I was bouncing all over the pits. I wanted to stay all cool and stuff. But I couldn’t hold it in…. it would just bubble out and I would be begin laughing out loud and grinning like an idiot every time I would think about that pass. The wheels came up HARD. I could feel the car carry them out a good distance from the line. How far? Heck I don’t know… but far enough for me to KNOW it was a good run from inside the car. I love these tires. They hooked perfectly EVERYTIME.
Dang this converter is bad ***. Dang this MTI heads/cam set up is the BOMB. It is consistent as all get out. How consistent?
Well I tried one more pass before heading home. How was it? (My hands are shaking just thinking about those last two runs)
The last run of the night:
The 60’ felt GOOD!
60’ 1.381 (again!)
330’ 4.248
1/8 6.714
mph 99.83
1000’ 8.850
¼ e.t. 10.663
mph 124.02
Man, after I saw the ticket…I couldn’t get out of the car. I was just stunned.
When I finally did get out, I thanked the Lord for that run. It just so far exceeded what I thought the car would run with no tuning. It just honestly had me stunned.
Thanks Mike Senia at Yank for this kick *** tranny and WONDERFUL converter. You were right. The TP4400 was the way to go.
Thanks also to Jayson at MTI. Your guys built me an awesome combo and I just wanted to say “thanks”. (I love these freaking heads)
10.66….WOW ( I am VERY tired right now… but how can I sleep after a night like THAT?)
