28" with 4:56 Pros and Cons M6 questions
So I'm debating on going from 3:90 275/40/17 to 4:56 275/50/17. My cam would love more gear seeing it makes power to 7k. With 4:56 and a 28" tire I can go up to 128 mph in the 1/4. I'm on the stock 10 bolt with M6 trans and I don't care how weak it's going to make it.
So my question is for the people that have had this combo.

- How are they driving around on the street for a weekend warrior

Just my personal opinion scotty, but unless it's a dedicated track car I wouldn't make the jump. I'm not saying it wouldn't be worth something overall (even for a street car) but the time and money to make the switch (plus changing tires) just wouldn't be worth it IMO for a car that's basically a street machine. Just a thought...

I think it's a question of how good a 28" tire will hook vs. your 25.6" tire as the overall final ratio of the two setups is almost the same, the 275/3.90 final ratio is actually taller of the two.
These ratios give roughly the same overall ratio:
4.10/26"
4.30/27"
4.56/28"
In street trim with275s the 4.56s might be too much. Everything I've read indicates the 28 incher will hook the best.

If I stayed with the current tires size I'd just about run out of gear in 4th trapping at 116 which is my current trap with 3.90s.

I personally think how the car responds to gearing is in the TOTAL combo....
I have my reasons why I say this. A big cam car like a 240 plus duration ls1 car could really benefit from a 4.57 gear *big cams love gear and lots of rpm and needs the gear to put the car in its "sweetspot".
As mentioned above 1-4 gears would come really fast!!
A LS3/LS7 headed motor I would recommend running lots of gear there too due to the port design. Those big rectangular ports really turn on after 4000 rpm!! (Even a stock 317 head stomps a ls3 in the torque department to 4000 rpm or so) I've noticed those square port motor love life in the high RPM range. Same goes for single plane intakes. Also not to mention stroker motors.
Plus weight should be taken into consideration also. Less weight you got the less gear you can have and still pull killer times at the track.
On the other hand I've seen people run a 4.30 or more gear and the car just falls on it's face or the car just spins instead if actually pulling. More gear is not always better. It's a white M6 Camaro with a 402 Ci motor that weighs over 3700 lbs and pulls the front wheels with 3.90 gears. 60 ft is a 1.5......
Just my Outlook on this but I'm still learning as I all I study is all motor setups
