Thumbs up Lets see your Towing Setups!

Anyone else here buy a truck and trailer before their race vehicle? Okay, so I'm a little backwards and bought the cart before the horse.

The truck is a 2004.5 Ram, Cummins 600 diesel. I've had it almost three months now. I just picked up the 18' steel deck car hauler yesterday. I went with a more fancy looking one since this will be the last open car hauler I purchase so it will have to last a while. I'd like an enclosed hauler, but I couldn't store it at my house.

I'll be using this setup for the first time to haul the '69 to Atlanta for the Year One Commerce Challenge event, where it will be it's official debut. Can't wait!

shopping for an LS1 drag car next....

Wow, that is a nice setup! I'd like to pickup a pickup and trailer a few years down the road to tow. I have a couple questions tho:

- What's a ballpark figure for the cost of an open air trailer similar to that?
- How much does it weigh?
- And I've always wondered, how the heck do you get a car that broke back on the trailer???

we just bought a 26' enclosed. we did the open trailor deal for some time and it just was so annoying. but then again it took me a bit to save up for one, but wow am i glad i got one. we have a 2003 duramax 2500HD to pull it. i gots to get some pics for it. trailor is sitting at FMS right now lol. also it is a pain to store it (pay for storage) but when you hit that winch to pull the car up on the trailor, oh yea. it was worth it!

tony, i think you got some overkill with your rig for that setup. but nothing beats tq to pull that sucker at fast highway speeds, esp if you want ot get home.

we should be hitting up atlanta so it would be cool if we could park by each other and share a few brews!

to answer the questions, yea if it breaks, you better find some buddies! that is where a winch really is nice or required. esp a remote controled one. an open trailor like that one can weigh from 1500-1800 lbs. an enclosed totally depends on what is inside it (cabnets, fridge for the beer, tools, etc. but our 26' weighs only 3800 lbs empty. it is an empty box. you can have car trailors that weigh 4500 lbs the same size. costs - well like a lot of things, it depends on what you want to spend and how much truck you have to pull it. 1500 bucks - 10K - unlimited

This might be my new rig. I have to see if the 0.0% financing available first.

Tony, PM me some sponsorship info. I'm a salesman up here in Milwaukee at a chevy store and would love to hook some LS1tech members up if they were looking for some new haulers and willing to travel a bit. Could even pick up at airport that's right down the road

PS- also have a Ford store that's part of the 3 store chain (Chevy, Chrysler/Jeep, and Ford)

Damn sweet. Dodge towing is the best. gobs of torque.

Dodge ram 1500 5.7L hemi, 20ft hydraulic tilt trailer,4000 pound marine winch and 10,000 weight distribution package. And found a place to put all my stickers.

Trailer prices vary. You can get their basic 18' (2' dovetail) steel deck open hauler for $1895 plus ttl. The rock guard up front was a $250 option. I went with their more deluxe trailer though, it just looks more fancy with its walkaround polished diamond plate step and recessed tow hooks. It was $2250 plus the rock guard. After taxes, $2750 out the door.

I ordered a Superwinch (2300 lb pulling rated) today to bolt to the front of the trailer deck. I also ordered the optional trailer wiring harness kit which is pretty cool. Comes with 19' of heavy gauge wiring and a quick disconnect that you pre-wire onto your truck with the quick disconnect mounted to the underside of the rear bumper. If your car is broken, you just plug it in and pull the sucker up onto the trailer. Total price on the winch/harness was around $300. If you don't have a winch, it takes about 3 normal sized guys to push a car up onto the trailer easily.

well I think I win for the sexyest truck! Cadillac Escalade EXT, 22" b/c of towing no 24" and 3 tvs, nav, speakers you name it I got it! The only thing it doesn't have is good gas mileage. Looking for a 28' inclosed trailer in white but will take 3 months to build custom so will buy in December after taxes.

Tony that rock guard was a good idea with the dually. I have a hyd. tilt open trailer (no ramps) and was thinking of fabbing it up for mine. The thing I hate about my open trailer is when you run through rain the car gets nasty as hell.
I really want an enclosed trailer though. Gold Rush builds some very nice aluminum enclosed trailers but they are real pricey. They run about a $1000 a foot but are very light and they hold their value well.

Default can you say BUDGET

wow, you guys make us look bad. Our tow vehicle is a 95 Chvey Pickup with over 150k miles and the trailer is a used trailer we picked up from Tony a while back for under $1k. We recently got new wheels and tires for it and replaced the floor boards too since one fianlly broke when my step-dad was loading up his nice 80's Malibu.

Have no place to put anything so I had to go small and light. Trailer only weighs 1300lbs has 4 wheel brakes and a 4' dovetail with 6' ramps and the car goes right on without even jacking up the tongue. Plus the fenders come off in 20 seconds but C5 and F-body doors clear with them on. Nice trailer..

Been towing with an '03 Durango with factory tow package and 3.90 axles and so far so good. Little more light duty then I'd like but it fits in the garage, gets 11mpg towing (17 not towing) and handles fine - the trailer has great brakes and that really helps. For occasional use it works out well, I have put 30K on the truck in less then a year, 15K towing, and it isnt falling apart yet

Yeah, better check that weight towing capacity on the 'Sclade compared to the trailer, vehicle weight.

Gator, what is overkill? This truck will still be suitable for my next trailer

After having 2 street/strips cars (neither with overdrive) I finally got a pick-up this April, an '04 GMC Sierra 1500 ext cab 5.3L 3.73 geared. Bought an open trailer from a bud (GeorgeC) and the Nova has now been towed to the track once after years of driving and swapping tires. I'm getting some experience for my tow to Atlanta next month for the et finals. And to think I drove the Nova there in 2001 (6-1/2 hours each way, about 400 miles and 3500 rpm's) I'll have pictures soon on the complete set-up, meanwhile, here's a link to the truck pics: http://community.webshots.com/album/142012841GVSTCJ
