if youre talking about air:
Density Altitude is pressure altitude corrected for non standard temperature.
That is the official FAA [Federal Aviation Administration] Definition.
If you are at sea level, the barometric pressure is 29.92 In Hg and the temp is 62F your DA will be 0' If the pressure goes up or down, your DA changes, if the temp does up or down, your DA changes.
Despite what people thing, the amount of water in the air has no bearing on DA. From 0" relative humidity to 99" relative humidity the DA may change 3' or 5' The engine is effected, but the calculation is not.
The most accurate way of determining DA is with an E6B [flight computer] of with a hand held weather station. I have found that online websites are sometimes as much a 1000' off from the true calculation.

Density Altitude is thee most important factor to know when dialing in your car (E.T.) for a bracket race. it tells you the level of altitude which will determine how fast you will go. Computech has some good hand helds.
