Do K&N filters really produce anything?
After finding that the paper filters can be found for $7, is it actually worth spending $60 for the K&N? Has anyone actually picked up power from one of them?

The only reason to go with a filter like a K&N is for the reusability... there is no performance gain from them. Even then, you're better off going with a Fram because you can replace one 10 times over before the K&N filter shows any savings money-wise... and by then the K&N is looking pretty haggard.
Bottom line, not worth it.

They produce an oily crust on your MAF sense elements
if you over-oil it a little. Bonus there.
When I tested paper elements the Purolator was slightly
lower restriction than Fram, but both of these were better
than the OEM paper filter.

I am also using the Fram air filter, and I like it. I replaced the OEM unit with the Fram unit, and I did notice a difference in the car. As far as the K&N unit goes, save your money. They are way over priced for an air filter element. You have to buy their cleaner, and then you have to buy their special oil, plus your out the initial dive-in price for the K&N element. By then you could have already bought at least a few years supply of Fram air elements. The philosophy behind them is about what Gillette goes by for replaceable blades for your razor.

Yep, there have been some independent tests that show the FRAM paper filter makes as much power and flows just as well as the K&N. GM has also said in some corvette applications that the oiled filters have caused problems (De-screened applications I think). When I de-screened my MAF I went with a paper filter.
