New car for 2009 build, D1SC/347

I shoot for 12-12.2:1 a/f most of a pass, seems lean but 11.5:1 or so costs too much power IMO. But when tuning close to the edge like that you have to keep on it all the time.
I really should do a SD tune but the starts/runs/drives so nice as it is I hate to mess with it. Here is what it looks like on a log.

I see, atleast you know where your problem is.
I may have missed it but, 86* IAT's is that typical and how does it vary through your run? And what kind of timing are you running?
I have my afr to 11.57, I think I'm going to lean it out a bit and see how we do on the next outing.

In the summer it will pick up 30* in the 1/8 and 45* in the 1/4 from wherever it starts, pretty normal in my experience with these ICs. A2A really isnt the best for a drag car, not ebough air getting through it at 6-8 seconds to make much difference, its really just a big heat sink.
Timing varies from 25 to 15 degrees, my timing curve wont work on a turbo car at all.

I have a small blower fan I put on the superchrger/intercooler when I'm at the track, it was 80* out and sunny when that log was made.
Since boost is linear and 100% tied to engine rpm with a supercharger my timing varies quite a bit, at 1-2 psi it has 27 degrees and at 15psi it has around 15 degrees. Naturally once the car passes about 40 feet out it will never see below 5900 rpm so the timing stays around 15-16 degrees the rest of the pass. But for a drag race car the 60 foots are the most critical and that a/f and timing down low is very important for me since I really dont make a lot of power.

That's what I've been trying to find out about the timing. Would I be able to add some timing in the lower rpms where there is minimal boost? I think I may have asked you that before, if so sorry for the questions.

You can run more timing where the boost is low, its a little tougher to MAP with a turbo though. Just make sure and use the boost timing table to make sure if you crank up the boost controller or something spikes it will pull timing.

Really, I'd be surprised if this car made 550rwhp. Its not that light either, just has a decent lightweight drivetrain and decent suspension. More power = more headaches, I'd rather run 9.50s and never do anything but change the oil/tires these days.

Damn 98's don't have that even with the custom OS. Any other suggestions besides relying on the boost timing table?

Just make sure it cant make any more boost than you have the timing set for in that rpm range. Thats one of the reasons why I use a centrifugal supercharger instead of a turbo, they are just a lot easier to tune since there are no boost surprises anywhere in the rpm range.

Was going to go yo the NMCA race in Bowling Green this weekend and get some 1/4 mile times but the weather looked crap, decided to visit my parents in Chicago and since the weather looked good figured I'd drag the car along to Byron dragway.
It ran exactly what I though it would 10.05 @ 134 with a spark plug wire off (oops), 9.63 @ 140 (foot brake) and 9.55 @ 141 with a 1.335 60 foot (2 step/trans brake set @ 2800 rpm). It was super crowded so I packed it up after 3 passes, my goal was a 9.5x, could have probbaly got in the 40s leaving a little harder off the trand brake but I didnt want to wait another 2 hours to make another pass - especially being 700 miles from home.
Pretty nasty cross wind but the DA was a reasonable 1500 feet, that was on 50/50 93 pump and VP unleaded 109. The D1SC had 7.25/3.7 pulleys, peaked right at 14psi. I'm very happy how its running, I still have a bunch or weight I can remove and with a 3.4 pulley + bigger injectors and some better weather it will be a 9.20 car. But honestly I like it just how it is so I'll leave it for a while..

You've tuned that car to hit very hard off the line....looks great.
You've built a simple, very fast combo.
When you come to Bristol, make a run with the same tune-up so we can compare tracks...hard to get that kind of info.....
Street Fights this Thursday...have to have DOT's though.

Looks good Kevin. I was going to go to bowling green as well but you ever know this time of year. How do you like the M9 set up?

It would run slower at Bristol depending on the weather of course, Byron is by no means a 'fast' track but it does hook hard. Thats where they have the big wheelie contest every year. I would probably run a tenth faster at BG in the same weather and Bristol is typically 2-3 tenths slower than BG for me. Its hard to compare tracks really, I ran 6.09 @ 116 with a 1.37 60 foot at 3000' DA at I-40 dragway here, and at Byron I ran a 6.07 @ 114 with a 1.33 60' at 1500' DA.
I see they are doing regular test and tunes at Bristol so I may go up there this year, I hate going to those street fights, wate of time IMO.
M9 is OK, on the plus side its light, torque arm clears everything nice. On the minus side I dont know who thought it was a good idea to put the vent on the top RH side of the housing, I had to rig something up to stop it from spaying gear oil out of the vent every pass and it still leaks. I dont know why they took the vent off the axle tube, never had an issue there. That and the TH400 crossmember setup with that funky trans mount adapter plate is pretty silly, not to mention I had to make a 1" thick shim to raise the trans up to get close to right driveline angle, they should make a dedicated TH400 crossmember instead of trying to make 4l60 one work. Arent you glad you asked
