Default Rear mount turbo setup, oil return pump suggestions?

Hey everyone,
I'm in the process of gathering parts to built a rear mount turbo setup (like an sts, but doing it myself). I decided to do it this way after seeing a couple kits and how they worked, and also not wanting to hack up the car. Does anyone have a recomendation on a brand of oil return pumps? I have searched quite a bit, and of course everyone says their brand is the best. I would like to hear from someone that has one and has put some miles on it. This is a daily driver, and obviously if the pump craps out, you are stuck!

Thanks for any suggestions.

Does STS sell their pump outside the kit? I had heard it was just a rebadge pump that they buy from someone. I looked up the mocal pump, 178 bucks, I was expecting to spend around $200. I'm not going to rely on a $50 ebay piece of crap that can make or brake the car getting home!

Any other brand suggestions I'm open to it.

I have to laugh, as I posted on another thread that I'd never heard of those and was leary of them. Guess I learned something new!

As for me, I used the Mocal. Loud as f@*k, but very efficient.

You can always use a rearend scavenge pump like they use on race cars. Same thing Callaway did on the twin turbo vette. This is what I plan to do also, dead reliable mechanical system if that is requirement for you. Just don't pull alot of vacuum on the suction line though from what I have been told, don't know how true this is yet though.

I think its going to be between the shurflo and mocal. I have heard of the shurflo and it looks like a quality piece. I'm going to do a bit more research before I buy.

Thanks everyone for the info and suggestions.

mocal look up schantins thread on the write up great help make sure you use the 25 amp fuse if you go with the mocal pump and get a good piece of flat rubber to mount it to to quiet it down also make sure you through bolt it. the shop that did the initial install of the sts on my car before I bought it did not and I was dragging it down the road one night. also when you have the carpet up put dynamat or something under there to help quiet it down ot is loud though. Don't forget the .65 restrictor for oil; line this will help oiling issues.

If you want the same pump sts uses, PM me for a link as it's non sponsor. STS won't sell them to you unless you can prove you own one of there kits. There are not a diaphragm pump, like the pumps above, but a true, spur gear pump with bronze gears and a ss shaft designed for oil and fluid transfer. They are pricey at about $290 though. They've gone up about $100 in the last year

With how much these seem to fail I would put two pumps in parralel and put indicating lights in the dash that tell you if the pump is operating. That way if you loose one pump, you still have another. If you only have one and it goes out it's bye bye engine.

If the pump goes the turbo will fill up with oil and smoke, won't take out the motor.

Kind of. When the pump fails the turbo does fill with oil. Since the engine keeps pumping in more oil (and the pump isn't returning it), the oil is pushed past the turbine oil rings into the exhaust and compressor housing. The smoking is from the oil being intoduced into the exhaust. The oil that gets int othe intake atomizes and is fed to the engine. On a MAF equipped car it coats the MAF leads and skews the airflow readings. This leads to very sluggish performance and the car won't feel like it's producing boost, even though the turbo can be heard spooling.

On a SD equipped car it's worse. There isn't necessarily any loss of power indicators, but the atomized oil is introduced into the intake and then the combustion chambers. Oil has a low octane rating and can produce detonation......which will jack up the engine.

Oil in the intake is also a real pain on a FMIC equipped car. Takes a while to blow all the #$%^ oil out of it (know from experience ).

The above is why oil control is such a big deal on STS kits in particular.

I heard if you run the oil return into the oil pan instead of the oil filler cap it will put less of a strain on the pump. Might help it last longer.

Why not try making a separate oil system for the turbo..? I am going to be creating one myself once my kit comes in and i can get started.

I had thought about a separate system, but thats alot of plumbing and work. I have talked to a couple other members on here that have been running rear mount setups for a while and am pretty sold on the shurflo. I do plan to install a indicator light for the pump that will light up when the pump is running. If is shorts out or craps out and blows the fuse the light will go out and its time to stop. I have heard the pumps can keep making noise but not be pumping oil, so I will just have to pay attention to the car when driving. If a big cloud of smoke starts to appear behind me, its time to pull over!

Jason

That method has worked for me a few times when I've had wiring or pump issues.
