Default Just my luck, D1 installed and now the alternator isn't working.

So I got everything installed and buttoned up on my D1 install. Go to start up the car and go around the block and everything is as it should be except when I look at the instrument gauges and see that I'm still in the 'red' area for voltage. I checked the exciter wire and it's fine. I'm getting 10v with the key on, engine off, and it goes up to 11.8 (battery voltage) with the engine running.

The alternator was working fine before doing the procharger install, so I need to check the positive lead coming off it and make sure nothing is damaged or disconnected.

The bad part is, if I need to remove the alternator, I've got to undo almost everything underneath with the head unit.

I'm hoping I don't have to do that. The alternator is the higher voltage truck unit and I still have my factory alternator if I need to check it out.

I'm just ranting. I guess it's the downside of having a supercharger setup.

I'm just wondering what happened. It was working fine, then I started the procharger install and now it's not working. I'm wondering if hit something or shorted a fuse or something.

Worst case sceanrio is the procharger comes out and I swap the alternator for my original factory one.

Well, I've removed the alternator, and I thought I still had my working factory 105amp alternator, but haven't located it yet. Surprisingly, I got the alternator out in a lot less time than I thought it would take. I've gotten to be an expert at removing the head unit.

What are your plans for the rear end? Just a street brawler?

its probably a connection issue, unless you dropped the alt or something.

I was hoping it was that, but I checked everything and no luck. I'm getting voltage to the exciter wire, and the positive wire coming off the back of the alternator to the battery doesn't have any shorts in it, so I have no clue what's wrong with it. Unless there is a ground or something that I missed, I have no idea. I'm going to put in a new alternator and see what happens.

I wonder if I can take the alternator to Pepboys or Autozone and see what they have to say.

I had the same issue when I first got my combo going. I had a bran new alt sitting there and decided to put it in verses my old one that came out of the car. I figured new combo new alt lol. I get 40miles from home heading up to my buddies shop to dyno the car and the alt takes a **** on the highway. I had to change it out in a parking lot on the side of the road lol I put my old one in and shes been fine since then lol

Yeah, it's weird, I don't know why it just stopped working. It's a GM truck alternator that's 145 amp vs. the f-body 105amp factory one. Unfortunately, I couldn't find my factory alternator, so I picked up another truck alternator. I wonder if it's worth having this one checked out and possibly fixed.

Luckily, I backed the car out of the garage, and then back onto the lift, so it was easy to drop the head unit and alternator.

Quick Reply: Just my luck, D1 installed and now the alternator isn't working.
