Default TC78 boost and hp numbers?

I've done some searching but came up mostly empty. I have a PTK kit that I have modified over this past winter to run a TC78 turbo. The car is a 2002 SS, M6, 40k miles on the car and motor.

I am running a stock block so I would like to keep the car fairly safe but would also love to see 600+whp. What boost levels should I expect to need to run to hit those types of numbers with this turbo?

Thanks ahead!

With a 9.5:1 forged motor through a 9 inch and locked auto I did 675whp with 15.5 lbs of boost. You have alot less drivetrain weight so id say you will need about 11 psi to hit 600whp. Probably won't live to long at that level.

On that note, being you have a factory ls6 intake you should install the pre 2000 rear cyl head stem vents. Also run a very cold plug and larger fuel rails with a return. If your at track throw some high octane in there. With all this you might last at that level

Thanks for the input man much appreciated. This is a street car 99% of the time. I live quite aways from the nearest track so I only make the trip 1-2 times a season if i'm lucky.

Right now i've got the boost at right around 12-13psi but the tuning is not done on the car, with the nice weather this week i'm hoping to be able to wrap things up.

What is the pre 2k cyl head stem vents you are talking about, haven't heard of them as i'm still fairly new to the LS platform, I just bought this car last summer and did the turbo setup over the winter.

The steam vents are blocked off in the later style Fbody engines. The earlier design vented all 4 corners and supposed to help with #7 cylinder meltdown where air pockets can get trapped due to it being capped off.

Port the stock TB as that is worth 10rwhp+

Also look into methanol injection if you don't have e85 in your area. Snow Performance anothers make good quality kits. More octane... lower combustion temps = happier engine making more power.

I've got a fully ported stock TB on the car, also running an open dumped downpipe that exits just behind the k-member.

I really only plan to run the car this summer as a stock short block. I plan to do a built block/cam/head build next winter so I don't mind pushing the car a bit. We do not have e85 readily available in our area but we do have 110 at the pump in a couple places that I will likely run if I track the car or decide to have a spirited weekend

A meth kit is definitely in the plans for this summer, I have a Devilsown Progressive kit I was going to install on the car more for safety than anything else.

My '01 Z28 made 530/525 on 10psi with a stock long block, slipping stock clutch and a super-conservative tune. 600+ shouldnt be hard at all with 12-13psi.

Thanks guys sounds like i'm right about where I want to be in terms of boost/power once I have everything dialed in. I might hit up a dyno day at the end of April that a few friends are going too so if I do i'll be sure to post up the results.

Tally i've loved your T/A since first starting my turbo project man, big props!

You would be better off selling your low mileage LS1 and picking up an '05+ style engine as they have LS2 rods which can handle more power safely. Seems to be 700-800rwhp they can take before issues arise in the bottom end (5.3/6.0/6.2).

LS1 rods beyond 550-600rwhp will bend the rods over time.

I am at 500rwh/tq on 8psi. The car is almost complete with built top end using a Comp cam. Hoping for 550 + on 8 psi...stock block. I do have a built trans with 3600 stall and shift kit.

Heres what mine did on 7lbs back when I ran the TC76, disregard the afr, as it was tuned on the street not the dyno.

15.5 Degrees of timing vs 17.5

Is that with the .96 housing? Or....? I'm sold on those TC's. For a compact and quick spooling unit, can't beat it and for everyone else, I'm not looking for 1000hp in a street car.
