what do you think about a powerglide on a 1000hp street car
Cars gonna make between 800-1000 and should weigh in at 3000-3100. Gonna drive it as much as possible on the street during the good weather months. Ill be running a 3.08 gear so I think even on the freeway it'll be OK. Any advice or opinions?

I daily drive my truck with a TH400 and 3.42's and I love it. Now a PG and 3.08's would be different, but also I only make around 600 atm and its 4200lb. I think a PG could be done, but why not a TH400? It's cheaper to make a really strong 400.

Just like john says, it is the truth, make some power and put some appropriate gears in
I have been 60e>th350>glide........i went to the glide and wouldnt look back

I have driven many glide cars as daily drivers, they are not that bad but do suffer in comparison to more gears for daily driving. I daily drive a heavy (5500#) truck that I changed from the factory 4L60E<4L80E, the loss of first gear ratio 3.06-2.48 was very noticeable, it took longer to make boost in normal driving situations. I kept breaking the 60E so it was a no brainer, but if your driving will be your primary thing you do the 400 would be more fun than the PG. The 400 can hold more power on stock parts also, but weighs more and is bigger is the drawbacks you need to live with.

Have you considered changing the planetary set? Could bring that 1st gear to 2.97 in the 4l80.
I'll probably do that for my Cadillac as vehicle weight will be around 5k.

Glide and the right converter is a ton of fun. Getting the converter rigth may take more than one try but it's fun! Transbrake makes it even better. Gear it for 26" tires at the track and run 28" tires on the street.
The longer first gear in the glide lets you concentrate on driving the car. A TH400 shifts 1-2 too fast. The added mechanical advantage can spin the tire too easy. Then people hit the rev limiter. If it doesnt spin then, it'll spin when it bangs 1-2.

2.48x 3.08.... 7.64 final drive in 1st gear with a factory gearset 400
1.80x3.08....5.54.
2.10x 3.08= 6.47.
Ideally the 2.10 400 is where itd work best given the rear gear.
This car will be raced on a drag radial tire iirc... given that... Its WAY harder to make that tire work correctly when you have as high of a final drive as the 2.48 400 has.
And to be honest... 3.08 seems pretty dang tall..... odds are any gear adjustments are probably gonna be made to a numerically higher gear.... that will just make the final drive that much worse with the 2.48
If its gonna be on a slick... you could get away with the stock gearing of the 400. But the radial wont work.
The right converter guy could make the glide work perfectly.
1.80x3.08....5.54.

I thought about it, but this trans came from Stoney, the retired director of motorsports for Hydramatic. It cost me about a dollar less than a cup of Mcdonalds coffee!

My truck is 9.25-1, it is a little soft for street driving, of course I am heavier and less power (900). The factory gearing I had was 11.41, that rocked for driving unless you count the multiple times it broke in the first 12,000 miles!
Since it is primarily a street cruiser I would pick the 400 out of the choices.
If it was a racecar that did some street duty I would still pick the 400 as it is easier on the converter and the engine.

If it is gonna spend much time on the street then yes a TH400 or 4L80 would be the best of both worlds. If it is primarily a track car that just cruises every now and again the 'glide might be better because it is lighter and only has 1 shift to deal with.
