ProMod chassis and a stock LS1?

A friend of mine has a ProMod chassis built by RJ race cars that has never seen the drag strip. I believe it was built in 01' and it is a Lumina body. It has a converter lenco in it. Since it is just sitting there collecting dust, they have decided it would be fun to throw an LS1 with a turbo in it and see just how fast we can push it. Any thoughts on the Lenco or good intercooler setups?

Lenco sucks? I've never messed with one before. As far as an intercooler, are they heavier than a meth/water setup? I really want to use which ever one allows me to push a stock motor the hardest or both. I've got a lot more study time ahead of me. Thanks for the advice this far.

I never ran a lenco but i did run a jeffco for a few years. They are good trannys but they require attention to some rules. Like no dry hops or it trashes the sprags. Frequent fluid changes. Special shifting procedure for street driving
(clutch only). And most important is shift pressure adjustment. If you can get all that together they work pretty good. It is alot of extra crap to deal with in my opinion. I wouldnt do it again. Just my opinion. Of course thats a jeffco but i bet they are alot alike.

What are your goals with the car? Street/strip? Strip only? I would go M1, no intercooler and a built Glide or 2 speed TH400 for an all out drag car. Sell the Lenco or set it in the corner for another build. Like maybe a small cube, very high rpm, very high compression, LS motor.

The goal for the car is strip only and to haul *** to a certain degree but mostly to learn turbo **** better. I would never take a Pro Mod and put it on the street. That's just not fun to me. I think we will try to find a glide for it. I don't see any benefit in a two speed 400 unless there is something I don't know about concerning bump boxes or other turbo stuff. I am guessing the intake temperatures can be kept just as low with no intercooler? That would simplify things but we do have a ton of room to utilize.

Yes. An S-10 and it set records with a 5.3. I'm not doing it to set records or get in the spot light. The chassis isn't doing anything but collecting dust and the LS1 sitting on the floor in front of it is doing the same so why not. It should be good fun for us and a great learning experience. That's why I'm asking advice from the guys that have been there.

Yea a light car under 1500hp a glide would be just fine and keep the weight down even more. Holley EFI alky and a single set of 500lb of injectors to start and you could be running easy 7.50s.

Use straight methanol as a fuel. No need for meth/water injection or intercooler.
Skip the radiator and fill the block/heads.
Spend your money on the fuel system and drive line.
LS1's are pretty weak by nature and not near as cheap as the other platforms.
Run a 2005+ 4.8 or 5.3 to get the biggest bang for your buck. 4.8's are cheapest by far. Leave the rotating assy alone.

It is a 99' Corvette warranty replacement. It's been sitting on the concrete for years, probably way too many. LOL
As far as the LS1 being weak or not cheap, I don't agree for what we are going to do. We already have the LS1 and it will handle enough to go pretty damn fast. As far as Methenol for fuel, I'll look into that. We will be using a radiator so we can make many passes back to back for a learning advantage in tuning. As said before, we are not looking to set the world on fire just learn turbo tuning and maybe later if the owner sticks with it we will live in the direction of a better motor like a fourth gen 5.3/4.8.

If it’s free and sitting there, more power to you! Though lots of NA swappers like the LS1 and you might make more selling it. The rods bending will be the biggest issue. Try keep it under 600ish below 5k… then pour on the boost. Cam and converter setup for 5k to 7500+.
