If you have an intercooler, you need to get your reference from the intake.

Lets say your wastegate spring is .4 bar which is about 5.5psi. If you use an intercooler, there will be pressure drop, so if your reference is at the compressor housing, then the intake will not see the full 5.5psi. If the reference is at the intake, then that is what the wastegate sees and runs what it should according to the spring.

Like TRT said, if the reference is at the turbo you will have to run a bigger spring / more pressure to the gate to make the same amount of boost at the intake because of the pressure difference between the turbo inlet and the throttle body

I have a rear mount and intercooler and my wastegate ref is on the intake manfoild. Have ran it like this for 1.5 years and works great. I'm running 7/10psi boost with the 4.8.

I had an issue with this. If you have an intercooler you have to run it to the intake like trt said. I think then if you have a BOV you have to run that one to the back.

The BOV reference also goes to the intake.

if the best reading is right before the throttle body then how come lots of people tap into the brake booster line?

You want the boost reference to your wastegate to go to the intake; reading what boost is at the intake.
You want your bov reference line to a good (brake booster) vacume source.

According to Tial, the wastegate reference should be before the throttle body. Any reason why they don't want the gate to see vacuum?

My waste gate has seen vac for over 1 1/2 years and 25,000 miles and havn't had any problems with it I do have a cheap *** Bosch bypass valve I'm using as a blow off to relive pressure though.

If you're using a boost controller then it won't matter if you wastegate reference is after the intercooler or right off the compressor on an STS setup because you can just set it to run at whatever you please.
