Default D1SC,....Loosing Boost at 4K rpm.

Hey Guys,

So I have a ProCharger D1SC, and it runs great except for recently I loose boost after 4K rpms. Until then the car runs normal and strong. But when I hit 4K, it seems like I can hear the waste gate open, or something similar to it, and the my boost drops down 1 or 2 pounds.

Any ideas on what could be happening?

Thanks!

Sounds like the belt is slipping. You have to really tighten the belts on them.

And is your bypass valve (wastegate is for turbos and is very different) hooked up right and working correctly?

If your belt slip is bad, you should see black rubber dust on a lot of surfaces, heading backward on the motor.

Yes, the belt needs to be very tight and that would be my first thought as to why you are losing boost. If you see belt dust on the head unit of the blower, then the belt is slipping. A new belt typically needs to be retightened after the first half an hour to an hour of use, as new belts stretch. Bob

Well, I don't see any black dust on the head unit. And the belt is not new, the unit has been on the car for 6-8 thousand miles.

Again it sounds fine and pulls fine until 4K. Then it sounds like the whine gets really loud and I lose the boos. I wasn't sure if this was the bypass valve.

I'll check the belt, and I'm not sure how to check the bypass valve. I'll take it down to the shop that installed the blower, and have them take a look.

Thanks guys!

Question

Have the shop inspect all the hoses, the intercoolers, and the air plenum box. I know of several people who have had this problem, and found cracks on the plenum box assembly. Bob

boost leaks and belt slip can be hard to differentiate from each other. But in the good old days or 6 rib setups everyone had belt slip issues. SD Concepts came up with a great solution. You might want to give their spring tensioner a look. Great design, worth the money. Also checking for boost leaks is just about running your hands around all the pressure side tubing to see if air is escaping anywhere. I have the polished metal ATI plenum and actually blew the weld out of it. I kept checking the rubber tubing and all the joints, never thought to feel around the metal/welded plenum.

Just a few thoughts.

You need to check the crank, I would before I drove it again.

Not yet. I'm busy with my new house, so it might be a week or two. I'll post when I figure it out though.

Is there a way I can check the crank myself?
