Uhh... if I'm not mistaken, you HAVE to add that to the gear oil.

Otherwise KABOOM.

It's pretty much optional if you have a torsen diff.
If you have an Auburn you have to use Genuine GM or Ford additive.
I bought a new Auburn diff a while back and used two 16 ounce tubes of the cheap stuff and it made noise around turns.
I called Auburns tech line and they said it won't hurt the diff at all, but you HAVE to use the GM or ford stuff, the cheap stuff don't work. They even recommended GM gear oil.
They also said this is the most common question they get, about people with noise issues and using cheap additive.

It's also a common item at the dealer for about the same price. $7 or $8

No, thats the stuff in the tubes I was told to stay away from. It comes in 16 ounce tubes. One didn't work so I tried one more.
Thats 32 ounces of the cheap stuff.
I drained it and added 4 ounces of GM friction modifier and gear oil, never heard the noise again.

Would the dealer have the recomended differential oil that I need? Also, how much of that GM LS Additive would I need to add when adding new fluid back there?

I wouldn't but gear oil from the dealer, I did once and it was about 3 times the price of regular oil.
I usually use Valvoline gear oil. And one 4 ounce bottle of LS additive.

One bottle from a GM dealer is all you need. $7 around here.

Pick up a gasket for $8 while you are there. The cheapie stores and not even NAPA stock it around here.

GM recommends standard Dino oil but I have always run 75-90 M1 synth with good results.

most syns say you dont need it bc its already in the oil. i am running trans-x additive with coastal dino 75-90 with zero problems. came from advance auto.

This mite sound like a dumb question but, why the gasket change when doing a rear end flush(if the gasket is fine like mine is) I thought that there is a bleeder screw to flush the oil out and put new one in without removing the rear cover?

My last change i used the valvoline Dino and trans-x additive with no problems... Just recently bought royal purple synthetic for my next change this winter. It says right on the bottle that it already contains the friction modifier.

on the stock steal cover there is no drain plug. Most after market alum. covers have a drain and fill built in so you do not have to take the cover off...
