Default Tried to swap posi unit. Why didn't it fit?

My posi isn't working but I have a parts car and the posi in it was working great, so decided to switch them out. My car has 3.23 and parts car has a 2.73, so I didn't want the whole rear end, just the posi carrier piece. I knew I would have to bolt my ring gear on the other carrier to install it, but I figured it would go right in. When I did, I found out the carriers are different and I actually need about a 1/4" spacer for the ring gear to move over so it will line up with the pinion.

Any one else have this problem? Do they make a spacer?

your 3.23 car is/has a 3 series carrier, the parts 2.73 carrier is 2 series. a difference of about .3". yes, spacers are available to use a 3 series gear on a 2 series carrier, but not recommended. for a 'granny' driven car OK,but not for a performance car.

Thanks guys. So, to get the good posi in there, I'd have to change the pinion gear too? Which means my choices are 2.73 with posi or 3.23 peg leg? Which would you prefer?

Use your good posi from the 2.73 geared car, and buy a set of aftermarket 2 series gears in whatever ratio you desire.

I dont want to sound like a jerk but the questions you have I think your going to have bad mess soon. setting up gears isnt for most techs. very few can setup gears correctly.

your going to need to set pinion depth and backlash all to spec and adjust based on pattern its the hard truth

similar,but opposite,to a very recent thread
that one to put 3series gears into a 2series carrier car
https://ls1tech.com/forums/gears-axl...t-problem.html

this one to put a 2series carrier into a 3series car and retain the 3series gearset.

I'm not going to pretend to know alot about rear ends. I wouldn't change out the pinion/ring set on my own, just like I didn't try to switch the carriers out on my own. Luckily I have experienced racing techs in the family that can help, but none of us really thought about the possibility of 2 different carriers.

So here's another question: Can you rebuild the differential or swap the internals of these 2 carriers or is that more trouble than it's worth?

you didn't say what year the 'parts' are from.
your 95 OEM posi would be Auburn, rebuildable by Auburn, but too costly.
you can find here in the ls1tech classifieds a low mileage still usable Auburn or Torsen, would be economically the best situation.
