Default Rear whines when decelerating

My 99 z28 has always whined since I've owned it, but only under deceleration. Its very loud at highway speed and gets gradually lower in pitch and loudness as i slow down. I used to think that it was some kind of exhaust noise but noticed that the whine is constant no matter what the RPM. I have no idea what causes the noise; any help is appreciated. Thanks

gears are screwed, if its been that long then probably damaged some more things in there. Might need a total rebuild in which case you might want to look for a good used one or for a 9 or 12bolt

I bought it with 75k, has 81k now. I've never been to the track with it, but don't know about previous owners. How much does a rebuild usually cost?

I took a video today at highway speeds that has the sound in it. I coasted from about 70 down to 50ish twice

it's your rear end for sure man. Same thing happend to my camaro with 70k miles. I put in a used 10 bolt out of a 6speed with 3.42 gears and it's even whining a tad. Not near that bad but still whines...wonder if i need to get it looked at? but yea the damage is done on yours i'd get it checked out

Sounds like excess backlash due to wear, mine were the same. Get yourself an AAM gear from Jaws, I went 3:73 for a little more pull. I also have a Motive 3:90 for sale but they are not as quiet as the AAM, but pulls nice and not the compromise of the 4:10. Les>>>

May be better off to find an entire 10 bolt for sale. Prolly cost just as much to rebuild one.
