Default Hows my gear patteren look?

Strange S60
new spool, and dana/spicer brand 4:56 gears.

started with the old .025 shims under the pinion race. was too much the bottem/root of the tooth with a flat bottom line on the paint mark. Changed it out to .029 and got this. Looks a lot better, Not sure if need to change anything?? BL is .009 BTW.

Not sure if you can read the paint marks off the pinion back on the ring? Don't see why not? (yeah I kept drag on the carrier with turning it a few times)

I set up hundreds of Dana 60's for crawlers and that pattern looks good.

cool, Ya I have no tools to get the pinion specs like the DANA manuals say. with that pinion height bar, and scooter gauge. So just guessing and reading the pattern. And was kinda surprised that looks good after the 1st adjustment, but haven't set one up really to know what I'm looking at. I found some good stuff and pirate4x4 and other offorad stuff, but not sure if you what it any different for drag racing. Its going get launched at 6500-7K rpms The old 4:30 set made some noise, I want this to be QUITE

I know the BL opens up a little after a few launches. I think I'm gona set it at .008-.009 and see if it opens up after I out some miles on them and a day of drag racing, Or should I not try to account for that?

So set all this up with the BL at .009 Put about 700 street miles (500 were easy breaking the clutch in) and a few track passes at high 1.4's 1.50's and got some whine now
I'm gona change the fluild, and check the BL, and guess to what it is now? And what should I tighten it to now?

That looks really good. You could tighten up the lash and move the drive side down and get the coast in the center.

I just set up my new 4.10s after having it in and out about a hundred times I finally settled on .005 backlash with the drive side pattern a little towards the inside of the ring. I do not think I could take it out one more time.

It has to be better than what it was.

after about 800 miles, and a few track launches went to cheange the fuild and check the pattern. and tighten it up if the BL got "set" and opened up.

BL didn't really move much. Was about .009 .0095. Good news in the TRZ rollbar that mounts to the panhardrod brace (there much stronger one) you can get the alum strange "S" cover off without having to remove anything This is the 3/4th gen setup. The spool in not going to come out.

I went to .006 -.007 The pattern looks funny.

I was putting drag on the gear set, and keeping it on that side of the mesh. This was in the car with the tires on, so it was easier. Kept a slipping grip on the DS, and turned a tire 1/4 at a time.
Ran it 2 times both ways.

Whats up with the coast???????? I dont think I messed the pattern swipe up.

Once the gears break in, I don't think it's a good idea to change settings ie. tightening up the BL. Does the rear make noise? FWIW I didn't see the original post and I am far from an expert, but the picture with the marking compound carried over to the clean teeth, it looks like the pattern is too high on the tooth.....possibly could have used a thicker pinion shim?

Do me a big favor, please. Look in a truck manual at a Dana 60. They are in every American truck, so finding a manual should be easy. Look at the exploded view and compare it to you S60 and let me know the differences.

Back to your problem. Mount a dial indicator and see if you can move the ring gear into and away from the pinion. You may have the carrier too loose. Did you set the pinion and carrier preload? It's a lot of work to do it right but it's important.

A real Dana is about the toughest rear end to set up. Back when I had my shop I bought a tool from Chrysler to set pinion depth. Cost over $1,200 in 1960 money. But it let you pick the right pinion shim without putting the pinion in. Saved a lot of time since the pinion shim is under the inner bearing's outer race.

I originally said it looked good but after looking at it it does look too close to the tooth's tip. A tip I always use is, it doesn't matter where the pattern hits the tooth end to end, but rather top to bottom. Sorry i forget root, flank, and all that crap.

Looks like the pinion has moved away from the ring gear. Maybe something was not tight and the pinion moved in under load.

Pattern showes pinion is too far away. Bring it out about .002 and see what it looks like.

I have an old Ford manual that showes a Dana 60 overhaul. I can take picutures of the pages and post them if you want.
