Default Gear

Hello Guys, I’m new to this forum. I recently bought a 01 TA WS6 with 39k on it, it is a completely stock A4. I want to put a better performing gear in it but don’t know which one would be best. I appreciate all the advice!

What gears does it have now ?
I would also consider a different torque converter.
If 3.23's I would leave the gears and go with a yank Pt4000.
If 2.73's I would go with 3.73's and a yank Pt4000.

I have no clue what gear it has now and I can’t check because it’s wrapped up for the winter. My first TA and I don’t know sh*t about them. I’m still looking on google right now to figure out if they come standard with a 9 bolt rear.

From the factory, a 2001 TA WS6 A4 would have come with the GM 7.625" 10 bolt containing 3.23 gears ( option code GU5 ) and Torsen 'posi/carrier'.
Typically A4 cars are changed to 3.73s' and an aftermarket torque convertor for performance. Both mods are great when both done. Individually 3.73s' are good but not as good as a good stall in the range of 3500-4000 such as a Yank SS3600 or CircleD equivalent.
The little 10 bolt holds up well with an A4.

As @FirstYrLS1Z posted above, your car came stock with a 3.23 and Torsen LSD. There was no other option for a 2001 WS6 automatic car (3.23 was a mandatory option for a WS6 A4).

I wouldn't change the gears at all, if it were mine. IMO, 3.23 is a good all-around street ratio with a 4L60E transmission. A torque converter upgrade would be my choice instead - some good ones have already been recommended above - MUCH bigger bang for the buck than a 3.23-3.73 swap in this application.

^^^ 3.23s' are a good/great gear. For the Camaro Z28s' A4 and Firebird TAs' A4,the 3.23 was the optional 'performance axle package'. Police B4Cs' automatically got the 3.23s' as part of the package. I like/liked my 3.23s' with the Yank SS3600,but I'm 'old school' and extreme and run 4.56s' for the wicked 1st and 2nd gear of 'light to light' streetfighting.

Dont see how you'd benefit from a 4.56 unless you had a wicked rear tire. Spinning ain't winning.
