Any 9 inch ford work?
Ok so i have a Ford 9 inch that i got for free and i was wondering what all would it take to make this fit into my car? I have no idea what it came out of but i know that i more than likely have to cut the axles down to same size as my 10 bolt?? The rearend is empty and i understand i need to pull the 10 bolt and remove the stock mounts and weld them onto the 9 inch right? Also where could i get custom made axles to fit into this and what gears would you run if you had a th400 and 4200 stall (3:23-3:73).

youre gonna need to fab the spring perches, torque arm mount, cut and size the axle housing tubes, and rebuild the center section, and press new axle bearings on the tubes.
3.73 would be a good gear, most A4/A3 guys use 3.73.
check out drivelinesolutions for gears and axles.

I am fabbing up a nine inch using an old housing. If you can weld than this isn't that bad of a job. I ordered my axles from Moser.
I would start by measuring the 9" housing that you have and determining the difference in length compared to your ten bolt.
The way I looked at it was I can have better components such as an aluminum 3rd member and gun drilled and star flanged axles for the same price as a normally optioned 9 inch.
I guess one draw back is that it is taking me a looooong time to complete it.
Good luck!

I bought a used 9" for $50 and only used the 3rd member, pinion support, yoke, and various bolts and shims. However, it did save me alot of money in my 9" build. The Moser housing and axle package and $1000 and worth every penny. I bought a new posi and gears and got it in the car and working for about $1600.

Make sure you keep your axle centerline good after you get done welding the brackets on the housing... you wont even be able to get them in if you dont check it and make adjustments...... this usually requires a long steel bar 5 or 6 feet long that bolts through the carrier caps in your gear... you can use a tourch and a bucket of ice water to quench the housing and move the tubes to the desired location..... I cant wait for 2 things..... people to maybe just maybe look at the faq at the top and to do this project ..all the way through ...
