HAHA. I guess you could go get a 8.5 from an old 70's wagon. Some of them came with it. The junkyard guy would probably sell it to you for cheap, too.

There's a lot of variables to longevity and the magazine
is just blowing hot air based on marketing material they
are fed. Anyone see a follow-up article that showed
how long it really lived, behind a 400HP motor, under
enthusiastic abuse? Yeah.

400HP at 6000RPM, the stock 10-bolt would probably
not mind. Not much higher torque than stock motor,
just hanging on further out.

400HP at 4000RPM like somebody with a 150 shot on
stockish motor, that's 50% higher torque. Still on the
right side of it? Have to see.

400HP at 5000RPM, big shot through a high-STR
converter? 100% higher than stock torque. GM does
not leave 100% driveline design margin on the table.

400HP on a built M6 car dumping the clutch off the line,
you have not only the motor actual output but the
front end of the driveline inertia spiking through the
hard parts. Instantaneous torque is well more than
motor steady state torque. And forget what happens
if the back end commences to hop and back-hammer
the gears. Torque may finish the job but impact is
what starts the cracks.

Car mags are comic books with fine print. And way
more ads.

I know a fella running a 10 bolt from a 70's TA. Paid like $100 for it, then had it converted over to Posi and all the other stuff our 10-bolts have for about $750. He runs high 9's with slicks on it. I'm guessing that's the 8.5" one...not the 7.5" we have right?

7.5" 10 bolts are generally junk but I can't complain about mine. I fully built it a couple years ago just cause it was way cheaper with putting the parts in myself. It had Moser forged axles, 4.10s, TA cover and factory torsen diff. I just added a Tru-trac earlier in the year after the torsen broke to keep it going on the street till I could get a better rear. But before that it saw over 12 passes all in the 11's with the best of 11.45 @ 122 and leaving the line at 5k-5500 in a 6spd with 275/15 MT drag radials and a best 60ft of 1.69.

I broke a tooth off a richmond ring gear. Still drove home ok. Then broke the torsen posi. Still drove home. Never left me stranded and never broke those moser axles. Honestly I think it would survive many 10 second passes in an auto car not spraying off the line.

But the S60 is on the way so who really cares!

EVERY one of the articles state the 10 bolts do not hold up as well on the M6s as they do the autos. This is why i argue with most of the guys that say the 10 bolt sux because if you look at their setup it is an M6 car.

Inconclusive data to say that. There are 3 possible diameters that the 10 bolt came with during that time.

Only 2 really, and the 8.2's are rare for a 2nd gen. Chances are it was a 8.5. Even the 8.2 is better than a 7.5 though.

BOP 10-bolt is different than the Chebby. They put them
behind 455s even, with 500lb-ft and a heavy body they
still held up. Firebird may have had the BOP piece. Seem
to recall they did not use C-clips and my impression is,
the BOP 10 was more rugged than the Chevy 10. Some
factory posi were around, I knew another guy with a
Sylark convertible that had a 2.56 BOP rear with posi.

I once took apart an entirely different 10-bolt, from a
'60s Riviera. 10 bolts but a -square- pumpkin, huge
ring gear with a posi chunk and a 3-link suspension
and some fine 11-12" drum brakes. Freaky & heavy.
Never did mate it up to anything. Each drum felt like
over 20#. I welded the axles to them inside-out to
make pedestal stands, for no particular purpose.
