Default 1LE driveshaft vs. LS1 aluminum shaft

I have a 1LE aluminum that I put on my '94. Since getting into the LS1 world, I have learned what many here already know: that the LS1 cars came with aluminum ones from the factory (with the exception of A4 2.73 gear cars, they still have steel).

Now, here's the question: I looked at the DS on my '99 and yes, it's a nice looking aluminum piece, but it looks smaller in diameter than the 1LE on my '94. I didn't have a tape measure in hand when I was under there, so were my eyeballs correct? I mean, is the stock LS1 piece NOT a 1LE? It looks smaller and is presumeably not as strong (?). I'm also thinking maybe the yoke and u-joints are also not as high-grade as those on the 1LE.

I'm too lazy (and busy at work) to jack up the car again just to measure the DS, so someone help me out here. I would just wait until I have another bit of maintenance to do, but I need the information ASAP.

Thanks!

The LS1 is a 3 inch driveshaft. I'm not sure what the 1le shaft size is....but lingenfelters website says it is a 2 3/4 inch driveshaft.

http://www.lingenfelter.com/lingenfe...mp;pf%5Fid=217

based on this info...I suspect that it is slightly smaller...

Trackbird,

Thanks That's a great link to answer my question.

So, the LS1 aluminum shaft is even BIGGER than the 1LE on my '94 (3" vs. 2.75"). My eyes lied to me.

Question now is, is the LS1 "stock" aluminum shaft STRONGER than a 1LE piece? How about the U-joints/yoke?

Bottom line is this: I'm about to trade one of those shafts away, and need to know which one to keep and which one to give up in trade. Please give me some input. Thanks!

ttt

Anyone? Which driveshaft would you keep? The LT1-era 1LE shaft or the stock aluminum LS1 piece?

I'd keep the 3" LS1 shaft. The larger shaft will likely (I'm sure it does) have a higher "critical speed" and be less prone to vibrate at high speed. Just my thoughts...good luck....

Lingenfelter is referring to the pre '93 1LE driveshaft being 2.75. The site says that 93 and up aluminums are 3"

My 1999 1LE car uses the same driveshaft as the other 1999 LS1 cars.

1LE DS have a thicker walled tubing than the LS1 DS from what I hear, which is why they are different and the 1LE is recommended over the LS1 shaft.

The driveshaft was not on the list of modified items for my car. The 1LE LT1 cars had a different driveshaft.
