I always thought of it as the original Z28 was for Trans Am racing and being a good "handling" car with a 302 since Trans Am limited engine sizes to 305 cubic inches. Where as the SS was the real "muscle machine". In my opinion its hard to compare the two because of that. Since they quit doing SS's during the smog years but then revived Z28 to be the highest output Camaro, it makes it even tougher to argue which is more of the top dog when the SS was brought back in '96.

Are your weight Specs AFTER the increases that are made this coming year for all the safety specs that the mustang WASN'T compliant with yet? Cause i know the 2010 Mustang wasn't up to spec for the new safetys regs but the Camaro was. Something like standard side curtain airbags and reinforced roof to take rollovers better

I read just over 3600lbs whereas the camaro is 3800+, so 200lbs or so. This car will not have an IRS which is where most of the weight savings over a Camaro will be. By calculations, the Mustang should be a tad quicker which is what Ford is probably shooting for. I know GM won't sit still for that, but we'll have to see. It's all good for us car guys; let the HP wars begin!

Maybe for the catfish Camaro and the IROC that was the situation, but the original Z28 for first and second generation Camaro's was a completely separate option from the SS. I will just use Wiki for reference..




The debut Camaro shared some mechanicals with the 1968 Chevy II Nova. Almost 80 factory and 40 dealer options, including three main packages, were available.

The SS included a 350 cu in (5.7 L) V8 engine and the L35 and L78 396 cu in (6.5 L) big-block V8's were also available. The SS featured non-functional air inlets on the hood, special striping and SS badging on the grille, front fenders, gas cap, and horn button. It was possible to order both the SS and RS to receive a Camaro RS/SS. In 1967, a Camaro RS/SS convertible with a 396 engine paced the Indianapolis 500 race

The Z/28 option code was introduced in December 1966 for the 1967 model year. This option package was not mentioned in any sales literature, so it was unknown to most buyers.[1] The Z/28 option required power front disc brakes and a Muncie 4-speed manual transmission. The Z/28 featured a 302 cu in (4.9 L) small-block V-8 engine, 3" crankshaft with 4" bore, an aluminum intake manifold, and a 4-barrel vacuum secondary Holley carburetor of 780CFM. The engine was designed specifically to race in the Trans Am series (which required engines smaller than 305 cu in (5 L) and public availability of the car. Advertised power of this engine was listed at 290 hp (216 kW). This is an under-rated figure.[1]

...around here, crap auto mags are already all over the 315hp mustang compare to the 430hp Camaro. This new 5.0l will kill the new SS really fast in the general public opinion They even say that the Challenger RT is faster LOLLL anything too fast here is considered crap anyway...bunch of Yaris/Versa/Fit driver.

They should have named it ZL1 and kept the Z28 moniker for a lightweight Camaro with a D.I. small stroke 302. I bet they could still get 400+hp and 7k rpm out of that motor with ls3/l92 heads. Especially with the D.I. Price it like the SS and make it an alternative for guys who want a Camaro that can out handle a Mustang GT without question.

One of the main reason for the car is to compete with the GT500 so they're not going to price it way higher. The differnce in price between LS3 and LSA is less than 7,000.
