Default POLL: The possibility of a Camaro Z28 model

I snagged this from the Chevy FAQ section of the new Camaro.

Q. In reviewing the Camaro model lineup, I noticed there is no Z28 model; are
there plans for Z28 model?
A. The “Z28” moniker has an honored place in Camaro’s history; but at this time, Chevrolet will not have a Z28 model available in the first production year.Chevrolet continues to review market opportunities and does not comment on
future product plans
.
With that said, I didn't read NO.
C'mon supercharged Z28

I really do wonder whether there will be a Z28. The SS with 418-422 Horses, seems to be plenty enough for me, and more than enough for most people, hell the V6 will be more than enough for a large consumer base (obviously not us enthusiasts). If they did make a LSA Z28 (I cant think of what other motor the Z28 would have), it'd be one expensive badass ride, but I don't know if GM could sell enough of them at a reasonable price to profit off them.

Once you get into the $40k category, people start saying they'd rather have a base Vette, which would be as fast, maybe faster. I don't doubt some Camaro enthusiasts would rather have a LSA Camaro, I only doubt there might not be enough of them.

Even with gas $3.00 is most states (though we all know it'll go back to $4.00, probably soon) I don't think anyone but the very wealthy would be able to afford and LSA Camaro that would get very poor MPG (Come on guys, no one would buy a 550 HP Camaro and not hammer it all the time)

I guess you can sum it all up in one word... Impracticality
But with those who can take on the added expense of a toy like that, it sure would be nice to own as well at GM actually producing it.
Good points though.

Who ever though GM would:

Top the 330 hp Northstar STS? . . . They did with the STS-V ~ 469 hp

Top the 400 hp LS6 CTS-V? . . . but they did! Hello LS9 CTS-V ~ 550 hp

Top the 505 hp Z06? . . . . but they did! Hello ZR1 ~ 630 hp . . .

And look . . . they're all supercharged

There should be one more choice..........same LS3 with suspension package, more in line with the original Z28.

Z28 wasn't not the high HP car it was the car to cut corners.

If Dodge can sell SRT-8 Challengers for 42000+ I don't see why the General can't market a 550hp, LSA Z28 for mid 40's. I say bring it on! GT500 what??

If they would lighten it up with aluminum, and carbon fiber, and throw the lsa in it i would bite. But i want it to look different from the other camaros.

I wish people would leard to read between the lines and pay attension to the little things fbodfather (scott settlemire) says. Back in 2002 at a local car show scott was there with the local camaro club and I asked him will the camaro be back and his responce was "we didn't build a corvette every year now did we". They knew back then it was coming back but just couldn't say because of all that union crap. THERE WILL BE A Z28. But unfortunatly you must wait a couple years. My prediction is that as soon as they get the production going strong we will start to see spy pics of a 5th gen in camo. Do you really think that the 550 hp lsa engine will stay exclusive to the cts v. Just my .02 cents and appolgize if I steped on anyones toes.

It depends on how the economy turns out.
For all we know in a few years it may be chevyota....
But I beleive they'll make a z28 version. I think I already read somewhere that they're making a z28 version that's a convertible with the LS9 supercharged 6.3...can someone correct me if I'm wrong.

it wouldnt be an ls9 nor would it be a 6.3

so far its a 6.2l non supercharged LS3
then we have the 2 forced induction versions

1) CTS-V an LS3 with a smaller ZR1 supercharger "LSA"
2)ZR1 LS3 all beefed up and the bigger supercharger "LS9"

It needs to be NA with less weight and harsher suspension.

Why would you want harsher suspension? Stiff suspension != good handling...

Well, I'm not sure which one I would like better, Aluminum frame N/A nasty or a beefire supercharged version?

This is how I would do it.

In the way they developed the C6 Z06, I would produce a Z28 in the same premise. Carbon fiber panels, wider body, bigger, better brakes, aluminum frame (if possible) and a nasty LS7 derivative. Now, there are some problems there... to achieve 550hp with a N/A motor is going to be tough to keep it SAE, production safe. Maybe something larger than a 427ci, possibly using a new aluminum lsx 454ci, making atleast 550hp and being very civil. Dry sump, reconfigured gears like the z06, etc. As for the frame, who knows? Can they make that global frame out of aluminum and keep their costs down? Maybe... But the point is to keep the weight down. I would like to see a drop around 150lbs. or maybe 200lbs. Would be tough but even at 150lbs, the car will be that much faster.

However, a lsa in a similarly light chassis would be awesome aswell. Personally, I know I can make close to 600rwhp in a heads/cam ls7. With the camaro weighing in around 3600-3700.. we would need to make more power. I would love to see a N/A track version of the camaro using the Z28 name, but honestly, it will come with the new lsq/ls9 motors GM as invested in.

hmmm.... 3500lbs, 454ci 550hp, better gearing, wider, nastier tires a la z06 or a 3700lbs supercharged z28?

I would take the N/A version over the supercharged version even though I voted for the supercharged version!

According to our trainer from GM that was here today "there will be a Z28, but nothing is carved in stone"
basically he said if everything keeps going the way it is for the car we will get it. it would be blown and make 500+ H.P.! he says it would be a 2011 model year and be released fall of 2010. as long as they can cut cost to make it resonably priced then we'll get it. for sure something to look forward to! as far as which engine it will have.... don't know. maybe LSA maybe something new we'll wait and see. hopefully there will be more talk about it from GM. they know we want it!
