My 10 bolt is holding fine for the moment, but I do worry about it all the time.. to a degree. I'm putting down 420rwhp through a 10 bolt, with 4.10 gearing. I have stock suspension, but heavy *** 18x11 inch rear tires with a 295 GSD3. I don't dump the clutch, but I have launched at 1500-2k (well.. slipping the clutch till I get rolling a little then letting it out and stomping the gas), chirped tires, and done burnouts.

I've had 3 cars with 10 bolts at various power levels. Here's how we go:
Car 1 (98' T/A): Small H/C stalled A4 car, 392 RWHP 373 RWTQ, stock 3.23 gears. 1.7X 60's, numerous times, ran 12.1's, zero issues.
Car 2 (01' T/A): Bigger H/C stalled A4 car, 442 RWHP 420 RWTQ, 4.10 gears, 1.60 60', numerous times, ran mid 11's.
Car 3 (00' T/A Current car): 396ci D1SC stalled A4 car, 653 RWHP 63X RWTQ, stock 3.23 gears, 1.44 60' (backed up with several 1.4X 60's), low 10's. This car is heavy and leaves hard, 10 bolt is now whining pretty bad and the 12 bolt is going in this week hopefully.
My personal experience and opinion: If you're making sub 500RWHP and in an A4 car you won't have any issues with any kind of racing. If you are making 500RWHP in a M6 and have STOCK GEARING, you'll last a while at the track and shouldn't have any issues with a roll. Anything over that on either, get a built rear. Rule of thumb, IMO, don't invest money in a 10 bolt.

russian roulette....
I've broken them without trying.
My latest 10 bolt is "holding" I say that despite the fact it HOWLS loudly during turns (posi issue). On the plus side it's survived 4k clutch dumps and 200+ drag races. Not to mention the WOT runs on a roll...

My .02, I have a 10-bolt with 3.23s in my car, it makes some noise but not much, I think the bearings more than the gears. I beat the everloving crap out of it and it never give me a hard time. I never launch it hard though, so I think the issue is with the small ring and pinion being flexed by a hard launch with no "give" i.e. crappy tires spinning and not hooking, then it just gives up.

10 bolts are GARBAGE!!! You might be one of the lucky few who's lasts a little longer but it's on borrowed time! I thought I was good if I didn't launch hard and kept spinning
I had my Spec 3+ in for about 2 weeks and one good 1-2 shift and BOOM!!! If it lasts you're a lucky SOB!!

i bought my car with 95k, it now has 125k on it, stock 10 bolt, stock gears. i have always ran street tires, but it hooks up pretty well even on those (several 1.9s, a couple 1.8s, and one miracle 1.7x) and i abuse the car on the regular, and prefer dig races over anything. as long as you are running from a roll the majority of the time, and you keep the stock gear, you should be fine for quite a while

That's the best answer you'll ever get. People ask this question all the time but the answers you get are really only opinions from people speaking from their experiences. I've heard of people running into the 10's and having no issues (VERY rare btw) but I've actually seen several bolt-on cars break them (including myself...from a roll) and my friend broke his on street tires, from a 40 roll, with only LT's and TD's. So... do you feel lucky punk?

Another thing to consider is weight reduction, the lighter the car the easier it is on drive train components.
If you get a hard top car without power seat, and all the fancy wheels that come on the ss ans ws6 cars that alone can save nearly 100lbs.
16inch rims are eaisier to turn then 17's, I think there were a few ls models that had a stripper setup, some of those cars didn't have power windows, or rear defrost.
The camaros are also usually lighter then a trans am, (no headlight motors)
Something to think about.

The problem with that is you woulld have to fab up all the brackets, then your breaks, then you have to find a way to make the torque arm work, If you did 2nd gear rolls and had roughly 400rwhp it should last,

I think my 10 bolt is going to explode on the 1-2 shift. It would clunk really bad when I hammered down on the 1-2 shift, but I replaced the torque arm bushing with a poly unit. The clunking went away and it doesn't hop at all. It sure feels like it is hard on the rear end though.
