Default 500whp Goal

I need opinions on a route to take for engine building. I'm looking for a 500whp goal. Must be streetable, it's going in a street/strip car.

Built LQ9 (408 Stroker) or LS7 with Bolt-ons?

the easiest way to make a streetable car with that power would be twin turbo i'd say.

I'm not looking for the easy way out, I want to be unique, fast, and reliable. I want a NA engine, no forced induction please...

I don't want a cam that barely idles, I want to have plenty of power in the lower rpms, not have to rev it to 4000 during street driving, and I want it to be reliable.
It's going to be a street/strip car. Driven almost daily during the dry months, with the weekend trips to the track.

forced induction would be the most practical way to get 500 hp, and still be streetable. if you have that much power on a NA motor, its not likely to have good street manners. even with a 408 your going to need a pretty good head/cam package and it wont likely drive like your wanting it to.

Here is a link to what some modded Ls7's are dynoing:

Looks like a bolt on/cam Ls7 is your best bet. But not the cheapest. Ls7 crates are going for like 10k! You can modify any other type of LsX series engine for much less than that and get over 500rwhp. Hell some stock Ls1's + Boost cover 500rwhp.

I am only 56rwhp short of that with the TTi street kit on 6psi with a stock engine. Tons more potential in it.

408 with trick flow heads and a custom speced cam will net you 500 rwhp. I made 434 to the wheels with a stock ls1 bottom end stage 2.5 5.3 heads custom cam and fast 92/92. I am pretty sure it should be easy to make 500 to the wheels with a well built 408 with some ported trickflow heads a custom cam and a ported 92/92 set up.

thanks for the input guys. I know its possible with the 408 but its gonna be tougher than the ls7, which is pretty expensive. I could go with 11.1 cr 408, cnc l92 heads, fast 92/92 intake, and a custom spec cam and i should be making close to the numbers i'm looking for. I dont really know much about the lsx's, could a big cube lsx be put together for my goals for much cheaper than the ls7?

out at the vette forum it looks like the LS3 guys get just over 500 wheel HP with a cam swap and tune. Not even a rowdy cam.

A stock LS3/L92 with a cam, headers and tune would do it according to the reports.

11:1 CR, Ported L92 heads, complete valvetrain upgrade, custom spec'd camshaft, ported FAST 92/92 intake, and 1 7/8 custom headers.

Hows that sound? I was also thinking about the trickflow heads, but haven't looked into it yet to see if they are better than the cnc ported L92's. Also looked at the sheetmetal intake manifold by precision metalcraft, what's your opinions?

You goals are not really realistic unless you have real deep pockets. 500 RWHP is like 600 FWHP, that going to take a lot of displacement if you want it to be streetable and reliable. I wouldn't start with a LS7. I'd go ground up and aim for 450 or more cubic inches. You'd obviously need killer heads to feed a motor that big, and probably a Victor JR type manofold.

IMHO I would go with and blown/intercooled LS1 or LS2 with a mild custom cam and ported heads. You would easily meet your goals and it would be more streetable.

It's amazing how much of a difference there is in cost between 430RWHP and 500.....I spent $2200 on my cam, and all bolt on's (stock 241 heads and LS6 intake)... I haven't got it tuned but I know it will be 420+ RWHP which will make me very happy...My buddy had the MS3 cam and bolt-on's, and maxed out injectors and still made 400rwhp. He then sold it and the new owner put injectors in it and got 420RWHP out of it.... So mine should be just above that with the MS4 cam... Wouldn't heads and a FAST make up the difference of 70rwhp??
