Default What weight oil to run?

Just wondering about what weight oil i should run in my 98 TA this summer. I usually run 10 w30 but i`m considering switching to 10 w40 because it would be a thicker oil and lubricate the internals better in the heat. anybody got any input for me?

10w30 is the max that should be put in LS1's. Anything over that you begin to lose power with the thicker oil roping around the crank robbing power. Don't be afraid to use thinner oil. It still has great protection. I've used 0w30 german oil and it works great. 5w30 would be nice for the summer depending on how hot your location gets in the summer.

nothing wrong with a 10w-30. if thats what you have been using just stick with it. on my old 00 Z28 i ran regular castrol GTX 10W-30.

GC may be thinner at start up but practically a 40w when hot. I run GC but don't see any problem running a 40 weight if you wanted too.

is this pretty much a stock motor we are talking about ?

if i is use 5w30

if you are close to the 500whp mark on stock short block i would seriously consider using thicker oil. 15w40 or 20w50 this will help preserve you bearings, because thicker oil will act as a cushion for the bearings.

Nothing wrong with running a w40. Switched to a w40 in my 98 for the hot Texas summer and it improved oil pressure at idle on those 100 degree Texas days.

i went from 5w30 to 10w40 mobil 1 synthetic to mobil 1 synthetic (I heard the 10 40 was still the better base oil) and it dropped my gas mileage to below 22 from ~30, and gave a noticeable decrease in power.

20W50 - Oil purpose here isn't to "cusion" - It's to create a thin layer between the two metal surfaces insuring they never touch, there's no need to construct the layer of a thicker oil here causeing a much higher coeficient of friction, unless the clearances are larger than OEM.

sounds like there is something else going on with your car, oil isn't going to make a dramatic difference like that.

Wow and i thought i was the only one running 0w30 oil. People always look at me and ask if it still offers protection lol

0w30, and 10w30, have the same viscosity once they're at operating temps.

yes 20w50 and yes oil does act a a cushion on the bearings. i am pretty sure there is a couple of turbo guys running this oil with no problems.

next time you replace an lsd try measuring the play with it dry and when it is lubed up. then you will know what i mean by oil acting as a cushion.

There's .003 clearance between the crank/bearings - you wouldn't noticle any difference in play between wet/dry.

Also, an LSD has MUCH more clearance, which is why gear oil is 90W

Which turbo guys are you thinking of? Any chance they have a built motor? Probably with altered bearing clearances?
