Is the SS in good condition? Any mods? Really depends on what you want. I think the L would be worth a little more money then the SS.

And the other thing is... He says he has the title but it was never transfered into his name. Just signed over from previous guy. Any scams like this out there? He says I can keep the tilte to the lighting till I get the camaro transfered

No mods. Says "9 outta 10" car inside and out. Just some scratches on rear bumper.

I don't do business without a clear title. Might be fine, but sounds odd. Good to keep your title, but a title and stolen car....is still a stolen car. If you are serious and he is serious, tell him to get the title in his name and then talk turkey.

Totally the way to go. Or drag him to the DMV with you to do a Xfer. That'll freak any potential thief out.

I love f-bodies like there is no tomorrow. . . But if your Lightning is even some what clean, I would much rather keep the Lightning.

It is odd. He says he bought it 2 weeks ago, but he is a mustang guy and knew he wasn't going to keep it.

Well did he say who he bought it from? If he bought it two weeks ago I dont think thats enough time for the title to actually be transfered into his name. I know everytime I buy a car here in ct it can take a couple months before its actually transfered on paper. Also,in order for him to sell you the car he has to first transfer the title into his name before he does so. I went through that when I sold my z-28 last year.

If I was you, I would look the values up on nadaguides.com & make sure
that the Lightning isn't worth a lot more than the SS. If it is, you should
sell it, pocket some cash & buy another f-body.

I hate dealing with titles. If everything is local maybe you can talk to
the original owner of the car. I think that he has to sign it over to you
anyways. If not make him get the title in his name before you buy it.
If you plan to trade him for your truck, it would probably be smartest
to meet him at the DMV & get your truck put in his name & his SS put
in your name. Then if any problems arise you can back out of the deal.

Thanks. Thats what I did. The lightning is worth more except for a crack in the windshield, body work on passenger door, and a couple other cosmetics.
But also has 20k more miles.

Jumping titles happens a lot. People don't want to pay taxes on a vehicle they bought, so they hold the previous owners signed off title so they don't have to deal with it. That's a more likely scenario than them being a thief.

Not sure how much taxes are in other states, but I paid $25 for a 1998 and about $45 for a 2000 (IL private party sales tax is based on model year, not value).

I know the economy isn't so hot, but damn.

exactly, i have dealt with this before and when you get down there you have to pay a double transfer fee, basically paying to title it twice, once to him then to you, the final owner. +1 for taking him to the dmv with you and getting some extra cash for the trade as well.

Lightnings break rods everyday. I have read numerous threads on their forums about this. It is a real problem and apparently a big deal in the Ford community. A very hot topic with those guys... I personally would never want one for this and other reasons (already have a 99 Z-71 for one). And my T/A will bloody it's nose......

Or, you could contact your local DMV and see what they say about it. It seems the smart thing to do and wouldn't take long.

+1 on the value check.
