If you look in the roofing section/gutter section at lowes, they have small rolls of aluminum/stainless steel sheets that you can buy. They work great for things like that.

I cut the sheet metal on all 4 sides then put it back in with aluminum tape, works good.

It will create sparks but you are cutting metal...no getting away from sparks.

I used the peice I cut out and welded a few peices of metal on the corners then sealed it with silicone.

^ yeah i figured, so how do you all block the sparks though. When I use my cutting wheel it makes hella sparks. do you all use a type of blanket or anything like that, cuz I worry about destroying my carpet or headliner.

sry OP for messing your thread up.

Cut the right side first and then cut a little bit in the top right side, now slip a piece of thin metal in there to cover the plastic tank, the plastic lines, and the wires, I used a piece 2" x 8" and moved it as I was cutting. If the cutting wheel went to deep, It will just scratch the metal plate instead of damaging anything.

I can't believe how stupid you people are! Do you realize how dangerous cutting a hole right on top of you gas tank is? I've been burned in an accident and it hurts worse than you can even imagine. So apparently you guys who don't think it won't happen to you. Think again! it only takes one spark to blow your *** up!
I can't even tell you how many people I saw at the burn unit for doing stupid things like you are doing. IT HAPPENS, it's just a matter of time.
Use tin snips, air nibbler or electric shears, but NEVER use a cutoff grinder. Think with your head or use common sense people.
I would hate to hear that someone burned themselves up because of being stupid. You don't know what pain is until they scrape your body of the dead burnt skin off of you. If you are into pain, then go for it! It hurts beyond your wildest imagination.

Think before you do!

u can always get a cleaner cut if u try to cold cut it. ( not having sparks) .... use a drill to make a starting hole. then use - like ole boy says up there^^^^^^ an air nibbler or shears. or if you really cheap like me.. hack saw ... keeps from throwing sparks and tiny metal pieces in your carpet , on your gas tank... and yourself.

Yeah all it takes is one spark to ignite vapors and it'll blow your *** to kingdom come.
