Default Camaro amazed me again...

So ill try and keep this short. i had to make a last second run uot to my work today, to get my timecard filled out so i get paid friday. if i dont fill it out by 4pm today, i would have had to wait a week to get it. well, i had 30 minutes to make it out to work which shouldnt be a problem, but then the check gauges light came on for low fuel. it was basically on E so i decided to measure hwo far i would/could get on such little gas so i hit the trip meter. i had to drive as slow as possible, even on the highway. i also couldnt stop for gas, as that would make me late. i slapped her in 6th, even using skip shift when i went from a light, trying to save everything i had, yet i also had to make it to work on time. well, i make it there, and then i had the whole drive ahead of me. started out in 3rd and used that until i skipped to 5th and a short shift into 6th. so im going an indicated 60 on the highway (i have 3.73's and never got it recalibrated) so i was getting passed by everything. now, i never et any races where i live, and guess what. a 350z comes flying up tp me and looks over and purges some nitrous. im thinking "goddamnit, why now." so i yelled that i have no gas and he went on his way. then, about 3 minutes later, as im still minding my own business and the 350z is about a mile ahead (long, straight road so i can still see him), a louddd foxbody comes up to me revving the **** out of his car (still doing 60mph-ish) i yelled to him to go get the Z cause im out of gas and he goes screaming after him. i checked my gauge and its ever so slightly below E so i was waiting for it to start cutting out. about 15 miles later i make it all the way to to the light and the gas station is about an 1/8th mile away so i knew id make it. i gave it one last nail of the throttle and rolled into the gas station with the car still running and the gauge below E. al in all, pretty amazing, as i did 38.4 miles total since the "check gauges" light came on. i knew i could get great hihway MPG, but ****, how much is left when the check gauges light comes on, and how much after after E?!

anyone else ever make it farther than you thought you would/could? kinda reminds me of that Top Gear episode where they got wayy farther than they should have on one tank of gas. shared stories are welcome....

[ha, bad job of keeping it short, huh?]

Hell naw man thats awesome...
Glad you didn't run out of gas though. I made that mistake 1 time and it was on an exit ramp off the highway and I had to push the car uphill with my nephew and my girl was in the car steering!

And go figure the only time something like this happens you'd get 2 races. Thats a bummer man.

Better luck next time though!

it's not good to run it dry (can clog injectors). I would never let my car get below 1/3 of a tank.

That's rough on the FP too because fuel is what cools it and our systems recirculate the unburned fuel which heats it up more.... For max FP life I rarely let mine get below 1/4 in the summer......

That's what the fuel filter is for I thought, to keep crap from reaching the injectors.

I'd want to change the filter after that though most likely.

Just minus what it needed to fill it up from 16.8 and that's how many gallons you had left in her.

My car has 4 gallons left in it when the check gages light comes on, so I wouldn't worry about it.

well, alot of people are seeming to think i did this because im a cheap bastard or on purpose somehow it was a very rare occasion of circumstances, and usually i fill around 1/4 tank. when i got back to the gas station i filled her all the way up (usually i only do ~3/4. car ran strong after i filled it up, so no issues with the fuel pump, and yes ive heard about the danger of running so low. but oh well, ive owned the car since april and thats the only the second time ive seen the "check gauges" light, so pretty sure ill be alright.

damn i wish i would have thought to keep track of how much i put in. i paid cash so ill try & remember how much i paid and divide that up.

and 4 gallons?! really?! thats insane, but then again, when yo fill these cars up, they go a mile past full, so it doesnt suprise me.

I'd say you were lucky. The needle in my car was just above E once, I figured hey I only have to drive 10 miles! Yeah as soon as it was on E that was it, car died out.

Haha..that thing was getting honda gas mileage.

The Fuel Pump is cooled by the gas coming back in the return line.

I would change the Filter soon and have a Fuel Pump on standby though..only a matter of time now.

I love how people say you will get all the trash from the bottom of the tank when you run low.

So...does your fuel tank magically keep all the gas from sloshing around over bumps and turns? Does the gas stay as it does when sitting for a period of time?

I mean..common sense only says that a few turns and bumps would get the gas mixing around, picking up all the sentiments anyways..right? or am I not thinking
