Default Trans cooler/ oil cooler?

I have an extra transmission cooler and I got the idea of using it for an oil cooler. Is there any reason that a transmission cooler wouldn't work as an engine oil cooler? Any help is appreciated.

As long as you clean it out, there shouldn't be any problems. The only thing that I could think of is that the pressure ratings might be different.
Plus you have to remember that it will need some sort of airflow to cool the oil, and it will take extra oil to make up the difference in hose and cooler volume.
Good luck, maybe shoot some pics when you are done.

they seem to market them as being either, so I dont see that there would be a problem.

Ok cool. It is a brand new tube and fin trans cooler that came with my performabuilt 4l60e. I didn't realize they came with one so I got 2 B&M plate and fin trans coolers that are mounted dope style, and I have an FTRA. If I can find a place to mount it I will definately let you guys know.

I will be out of state until after the new year, so it will be a while before I can even take a look.

Thanks for the info guys.

I will if I end up doing it. However, I already have two trans coolers mounted and a FTRA. I don't know if I will have a place to mount it. I also need to finish my 402 before I get on this project.

Sorry if there are spelling mistakes or grammar errors. I just drove for 9 hours (in a minivan), I am pretty tired.

I'd look for one that you can plumb up with hard lines, barb and
hose I would call untrustworthy with hot engine oil (OK for the
less hot, lower pressure trans cooling circuit). There are some
coolers with flare (or pipe, add your own flare adaptor) fittings.

Some trucks had an oil cooler that can be bolted onto the LS1
block (or whatever your 402 is). You'd be best off to have a
thermostatic setup that will keep oil above 200F so as to boil
out water and light blowby fractions. Cold oil gets dirtier, quicker.

My 402 is LS2 based.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HDA-512/ I amy fairly sure that this is the trans cooler I have. I am going to look into the thermostatic setup. Thanks jimmyblue.
