however there is a chance its from the oil cooler also

My sample has a high copper number. Where is it coming from?

A: If only the copper is high, but no other metals such as lead, tin, or aluminum are elevated, it is mostly an oxide of copper from the oil cooler. As the oil cooler is exposed to the heat from the engine oil, it can sometimes oxidize the copper, which will show up in the analysis report. This is considered a normal condition and no corrective action is required. This process usually will taper off or stop occurring over time

when you pull a sample, are you just catching it as it comes out the drain plug or are you using a sample gun?

thats what I was getting at. We do samples all the time at work (heavy equipment in dusty conditions) and dont usually have silicon as high as you have.

And people give me the weirdest look when they seem me change ONLY the filter and top the oil off at 3k miles. It's a waste of money to change a full synthetic oil at 3k miles. Especially on a car I drive 3-4x a month.

Sorry I couldn't be of any help though. I'm currently testing a 7000mi Mobil1 oil change on my DD F150 5.0L. Changed the filter @ 3000miles. Gonna try and grab a sample for test soon.

so are those good results with the castrol syntec 5W-30? Because i run the castrol syntec 5W-40 and plan on switching to the 5w-30 on my next oil change. I used to change my oil every 4k miles, but i rarely ever drive my car, so i might just change the oil every 6 months now.

For that length of a run it doesn't look too bad.

The silicon, of course, is from ingested dirt that passed the air filter. It doesn't seem to be too much. Normal for a 5k mile run isn't far below that.

For a list of the metals and what they are from visit This Page at the Blackstone Labs website. Roll the cursor over the elements and it will tell you what they indicate is wearing.

Copper in LS1s is almost always high. Mine has about 105k miles and the copper has abated to normal. Eventually it will get better.

None of your wear metals seem to be all that high to me over a 10k mile interval.
