Default Weighed my car yesterday, and a friends LT1. interesting results...

Did it just for fun, and i figured an iron block + auto would give me a decent weight advantage....

Mine- 99 Z28, 6 speed, leather, no ASR, LTs, duals dumped before the axle ttops 3440

His- 95 Z28, auto, ttops, leather stock 3400

...Both had just spare tire and jack removed. I was at 1/2 tank of gas, he was in between 1/2 and 1/4. So wheres the difference coming from?

gas is what, 6 pounds per gallon? So, 12-18 lbs there. What size tires are yours compared to his? Rims as well. Do you have a aftermarket rear end? there are many variables in this. Plus, they may have stiffened these later model f-body, which of course, would add weight

What are the power opinions on each car? Those "little things" will add up and make big differance. Also what kind of rims were on each car? And also as anyone who owns a F body will attest too The gas gauges such, all of my F bodies gas gauges went up when I floored it and went to E when I slammed on the breaks. And didnt 99 and ups have a bigger gas tank? So there is a good chance that he was alot closer to E then "between .25-.5".

And I could be mistaken but I really dont think overall there was that big of a difference between the weights of LS and LT cars. I think the reason why people perfer LS cars is because they are easier to work on and respond better to mods.

Good points, I forgot the wheels. im still on stock 16" ugly 5 spokes, 245/50-16. He is on some Eagle 5 spokes, 245/40-17 all around. We are both on the 10 bolt, mines been rebuilt with new gears and posi.

This was my train of thought. It seemed he should have a heavier car, iron block + auto vs. aluminum + manual. I'm not hung up on the weights or anything lol, just wondering where the weight was. I wouldn't sell my car for 40 lbs or anything.

of course the blocks themselves are going to be heavier. From what I found searching a LT1 block will weight around 80 lbs more then an aluminum block. But what I was saying is that when you take into account the whole car, other variables that can effect weight, the block is not going to make that big of a difference. Im sure that you can find LT1 cars that weight less then some LS1 cars and can find LS1 cars that weigh less then LT1 cars. and the OP is talking about a difference of 40 pounds, its not like its 2-300 lbs.

Alot had to do with the options the cars had, types of wheels, mods, etc. And like someone else said a gallon of gas weighs around 6lbs. So if one car has half a tank more then the other car that can be around 50 lbs just in gas. And we all know how accurate our gas gauges really are especially under a half tank. Were both cars empty? I know when I have my school books with my thats probable 50 lbs in books alone.

How is an aluminum block going to be 80lbs heavier than a iron block?

Aluminum > Iron

Aluminum > Iron
I got them mixed up, I meant it the other way around. But from what Ive looked up the bare aluminum blocks come in at around 120 and the iron blocks are a little over 200.

Sounds about right. My 99 TA has an iron 408,M6, and S60 in it. Kmember and Arms haven't been swapped yet, 1/8th tank of gas with full drive weight was 3397 when I got it shipped up here. A/C and emmisions are removed though for me.

The LT1s as I remember weighed in about the same as LS1 Fbodies, even with the Iron LT1s.

I wouldn't be surprised. Old school Muncie 4 spds weighed much less than Turbo 400's in GM musclecars. But that T-56 is one hefty unit, and the 4L60e is much lighter than the old automatics.

Having recently physically picked both up and moved them, I am pretty sure the T56 has more heft to it.
