Default #8 plug..watta biatch!

Ive read about how bad it is but wow! Best way ive found was to use a 1/4 ratchet, 1/4 to 3/8 adapter, 3/8 swivel and then the plug socket. Taking off air tube and coils. I tried to go from the top with 3/8 ratchet found not enough room. I switched to the setup above but didnt have the clearance or strength to budge the plug. Then I just grabbed my 3 ton jack handle and used it as a lever on the 1/4 ratchet an finally it broke lose. So the combo of the 1/4 ratchet and the jack handle is what did it for me. Thought I would share.

You can get to it from the bottom too IIRC, or maybe its the LT1 I'm thinking of...

I think I ground down a deep well socket for those I gotta check my toolbox. My T/A doesn't have A/C anymore so its pretty easy from the top.

no a/c would make it easier for sure. I had to sit on my motor to reach on mine.

Yea we have a 2002 Z in the shop for flood damage and the guy working on it just discharged the A/C and removed the accumulator to get to 6 and 8 lol.

I did mine from the bottom, it was pretty easy. Even got the wire from below too. IIRC I had a harder time with #6.

Driver's side is easy. Pass side is easy too just get the 8th from underneath. I removed the air system too. The coils I left on.

I just finished the the bank 2 plugs. I started with #8 cause everyone says its the hardest. Also installing some 48lb trick flow injectors too. Looks like there gonna be some hard ones to get to in the back as well.

I just dont see how you can do that with stock exhaust. I tried that 1st but with the manifolds and how the plugs angle, I just couldnt find the room to move. Would have had to go (from underneath) above the manifold on the right side and angle the socket back towards the plug. How the hell do you do that?

I did it 2 years ago, but I really don't remember having much of a problem with that plug from underneath.

I think what I did was put the plug socket on the plug, then put the ratchet (IIRC a long handled swivel headed 3/8 drive) on the plug. The tricky part here was positioning the ratchet so that I had room to swing it. It took some trial and error actually, I had to keep turning the ratchet drive little by little till I found a spot where it was in a position to be able to swing it. I think I only got a few clicks at a time, it was slow going...which is where the patience kicks in.

I also have pretty skinny forearms, so that helped...you guys with the Popeye forearms are SOL here.

It looked to me like you could also put the socket on the plug, then use a wrench on the end of the socket to break it free (as long as the socket has wrench flats on it).

For the rest of the job, only extensions I used were a .75" and IIRC a 2". I didn't need any swivels or anything, and I didn't remove the coils either. All I had to do was unbolt the AIR fitting at the manifold and slide it out of the way to get at #2.

Obviously the driver's side was cake, but after I was done with the pass side I really didn't think the job was as bad as I thought it was going to be after all the posts I read about it.

For the drivers side I used the smallest ratchet I could find with a 3 in extension. Got them all like that just get a towel and lean right over the front fender. Then the passenger's side I removed that air system for room and moved some of the wires outta the way. Get the next three like that. Then number 8 get beneath.

I did mine when I put my headers on. With the stock manifolds ya it sucks. Looks to be alot easier in the future with the headers instead of the manifolds.

Yep. Do #8 from underneath or from the top after removing the AIR tube and the coilpacks. When I did one of my cars from above, I left out the back coilpack bolt on that bank. It's a bitch to reach and you really don't need all of the bolts, so leaving it off makes for an easier job next time.

^This. You have so much more room to work on everything when you put on LTs rather than try and squeeze past the manifolds. The headers damn near paid for themselves with how much easier changing the spark plugs is now.

i do all mine from the top, for that number 8, i get a step ladder and sit on my kness on top of the battery (basically sitting inside the engine bay lol) then reach back with a 3/8s ratchet and plug socket, no extension and get it that way. Pretty easy. Ive got my plug changes down to about 20 - 30 min.... O also, I have headers and no emissions (EGR, AIR) which without that ****, u have alot more room.
