Full coverage insurance for a total loss title?
Hello everyone,
I recently rear ended a person in my 2001 camaro SS. My insurance company (state farm) wants to call it a total loss and pay me out in full ($9500) or I can buy the car back for $1600 and receive $7900. I plan on buying the car back and getting what they offer after I turn in the invoices for my list of mods.
My question is:
Does anyone know of an insurance company who will insure my camaro after I fix it? The car will have a total loss title( I believe this is the same thing as a salvaged title). I live in California by the way.
Any help is appreciated, I was planning on keeping the car forever.
Thanks!
Josh
ps. you can check my recent post on ABS issues to see a pic of my car wrecked.

I do not know a specific place but I do know it is possible. A friend of mine bought a salvaged TBSS and his local insurance guy let him put full coverage on it. Small town so I'm not sure if he did it because he knew him or what, but I do know it had the coverage because less than 2 weeks after buying it the fuse box caught fire and totaled it, again. Insurance paid him like $18k for it.
Sucks about your SS man, $1600 is a great deal though if it isn't in terrible shape.

Thanks for the reply! At least there is hope now. Ya I am bummed, I spent a lot of time working on this car by myself. Oh well, at least I can keep it for only $1600. Damage includes: bumper and all supports, hood, passenger fender, and headlight. ANYONE HAVE BLACK PARTS?

The thing that would worry me is when you find someone to insure it how much will they realistically insure it for. I would make sure they value the car high enough so that all the money you put into repairs and other future parts wont be a total loss if something else were to happen down the road

I'm pretty sure state farm will. My dad hit a deer with an old sububan and they classified it a complete loss. He hasn't fully repaired it yet, and it is still insured. They will add comp and collision when we finish the repairs.

Its not really buying the car back. The Title never changes hands and the Insurance Company never owns your car. I believe the Ins. Cos. call it an "Owner Retain" Settlement.
Other than having an Accident Report associating the VIN of this car stating at one time it had sustained more than $3000 worth of damage, I don't believe you will actually have a "Prior Salvage" Title. Don't quote me, but I believe its simply called a "Damage Disclosure".
When I settled with my Ins. Co. over an accident that occurred in June of 2011, I kept my car and there was never any mention of me needing to get a different title. I still have the same piece of paper that states the vehicle is mine, free and clear, since paying it off in 2005.
An Insurance Co. may think the vehicle is worth less if it has a Salvage Title, but that would only be taken into consideration if the vehicle was in an accident and was looking to either pay to repair it or deem it a "Total Loss". As for obtaining Full Coverage, they'll gladly take your money on any vehicle you'd like to insure with them. Crooked *******, anyways!

Also, the word "totaled" does not mean that the car can not be fixed and reinsured. It simply means that the repairs are too close to or above the vehicles market value and is therefore not worth it to the insurance company to fix it but to rather just give you a bunch of money toward a new car. If you "buy it back" and take the remaining money paid on the claim and fix it then it can be insured again.

If it's a salvage title car...after you repair it most Large Insurance companies will insure it with full coverage as long as you send them pictures of the car.
I'm an Insurance Agent here in California, let me know if you had any other questions.

Good luck with getting more money for your mods unless, you were paying for aftermarket parts coverage your probably out of luck. Mumbles can tell you all about how much they care about your mods, he Loves insurance companies and how generous they are.
