Getting married - decision on new car GXP or G8GT
Hello Everyone,
So long story short, my fiance will be taking my SUV in a few months and so I am on the lookout for a car.
I have made it down to two cars:
09 G8 GXP vs. 09 G8 GT
I know this is a topic that has been covered and it really depends on the persons preference, but I still wanted to get some insight and input. Here are a few items of note.
1. I live in Cali, sunshine 360 days a year, and car will be my daily driver.
2. The car will only be driven in the city, as my work is all lights to work. Therefore the big difference of a 25mpg vs 20mpg wont apply. The city difference does not seem significant to me. Anytime we will be going out of town, we will be taking the SUV and even if I do have to travel for out of town, my work will pay for the gas.
3. One condition for the car is that it has to be an automatic (per fiance request). I will comply as shes been nice enough to to take my older suv for me to get a newer car.
4. Prior to my SUV, i had a 350z for about 4 years and a E46 M3 for about year and half. I am really hoping to get a car that can match the performance and thats why I lean towards the GXP over the GT, but I have heard of some serious gains from bolt ons to the GT.
My question is for GT owners as well: if I get the GT, is it worth to spend 2-5 thousand dollars making it as fast as the GXP rather than just getting the GXP.
Any input from you guys is appreciated.
Thank you in advance and I apologize if I have posted in the wrong section.

I don't know alot about the differences in the trims on the G8's except I think the higher trims were the ones with the manual option.
Anyways I was just posting to say that over here on the east coast in my arear G8 are few and far between when perusing the dealers and private sell ads. If you find yourself in that situation, you could also consider a Gen 1 or 2 CTS-V if all your really wanting is an LSX based RWD sedan.

Not sure on the differences between the G8 GT and GXP, but I have heard the G8 GT is a different animal with bolt ons. I vote for G8 GT and the usual bolt ons. GXP's are a bit of a rip off in my area.

Let me start by saying that I own a 2009 Pontiac G8 GT and absolutely love it. I strongly considered forking over the extra money for the GXP and after much consideration decided on buying the GT only because I did not want to pay an extra $5-$8000 for 30 to 40 rwhp. Spend half of the money you'll save on buying the GT on mods and you will blow the doors off any stock GXP. Unless you were going to buy a manual I would definitely buy the GT. If you're wanting a manual, the GXP is the obvious choice. Headers, CAI, and to tune will add 50 rwhp easy. Spend $6k of what you saved and you can slap a TVS1900 on it and add 120 HP and still haul all the groceries home

IMO unless you want a manual, save some cash and go with the GT. Especially for a DD.
Edit
The GT has enough power to do this:

Best friend has a 09 G8 GT. He looked for a GXP for months and only saw 1 white one for sale and it was ridiculously priced. He bought the GT and with bolt ons it will rival a GXP and still cost less than the GXP would have.

I faced the same question myself a year back. The GXP holds its value remarkably well but I couldn't justify the extra cost for not that much more hp. I didn't want the GT because 1) I never buy a car unless I buy the highest trim level available and 2) I'll never own a car with sub 400hp again if I can help it. If you can live without the manual and you plan to mod it anyway get a GT.

Get the GT. Then get a CARB approved cold air kit, AFR 215 heads and a TSP vvt cam (214/228 114 LSA). Passing smog shouldn't be a problem with the cam having -7* overlap. I also get a small stall (3000-3200) and a cat-back exhaust. Going this route will pass both the visual and sniffer test when a smog test is done.

Are you totally opposed to a CTS-V? For the money you'd spend on a GXP, you can have +120 more whp in a second generation CTS-V. I actually wanted a G8 at first but the prices drove me away. I love my V so give them a look!
However if you do get a G8 GT, make sure to tune the trans!
