When you "degunk" a motor all the gunk is then free to circulate thru the motor. The gunk then goes thru the motor. The bearings, lifters, push rods, oil pump, etc. All those small pieces can get stuck and clog things causing problems & damage.
If you use a good oil (synthetic is best) and change your oil frequently you should not have a gunk problem.
There really is no substitute to tearing down a motor and tanking it.

I would just stick with the fuel additives, especially the ones that reduce or eliminate moisture in the gas tank. That's what I do and there have been no issues since I started many years ago.
For me, I use Chevron Techron once a year in all my cars. I also use HEET (the red bottle, not yellow) once every 3 months which works very well for the water removal and it also has the injector cleaner. It's only $2 - $3 a bottle at Walmart or on sale at the auto stores. Others really like the Lucas top cylinder treatment (it's a gas additive too) at about $5 per bottle. I've used it on occasion when I find good sales but mostly just stick with the Techron and HEET.
For really serious injector cleaning I have had to use BG44K when I purchased bad gas on a vacation once (Chevy dealer added it). My old Porsche mechanic also swears by the stuff and I was certainly impressed. It is expensive though and if I remember right, close to $20 a bottle. I'm sure ebay sellers have it for sale.

I have found no better fuel additive than Red Line SI-1. A full bottle works great for system clean-up, I have used it to restore neglected fuel systems in the past with excellent results. I use small doses of this product (and/or Stabil) with each fill-up for my garage queens to prevent any issues from the E10 fuel. After many years, my limited use (carb'ed OR fuel injected) engines have none of the fuel system issues that are often reported from ethanol blend fuels.

If you drive the car regularly just do you best to consistently fill up with Top Tier rated fuel. It has something like 5 times the EPA minimum requirement of detergents, regular use will keep you injectors and motor clean so no additives are necessary except for long term storage.

Injectors: Echlin Pro Clean through the fuel rail. Need the adapter kit to fit the fuel rail & cleaner can.
Oil gunk: Auto Rx
Intake, valves & combustion chamber: An inverse oiler that dispenses Marvel Mystery oil is best or a good top end cleaner like Sea-Foam on occasion. Nothing is better than an inverse oiler w/ Marvel Mystery Oil. Marvel Mystery oil is also combustible.
