I think the operating cost would be a bigger factor than the overall buy-in, given that these motors are really only built to last for 800 miles or so. But they are crazy cool.

The engine blocks alone, which are made from compacted graphite iron, are stupid expensive.

Ebay right now has a couple GM motors a Ford a Dodge and 2 Toyota truck series engines and all under $20k a piece.

You couldn’t be more correct. They are torqueless turds and would suck on the street in race trim. You’d definately want to de-tune them for street use.
