Default average cost on 10 bolt rears now a days

recently just broke my 10 bolt rear end in my a4 02 ss 3.23 gears and was looking around and am not seeing too many rears at all and if I do they're around $700 plus for pretty beat up ones from junkyard. was looking on the site and seems like some people were getting good used rears for $150-400 ish but that was some years ago. was quoted $2200 to have the rear end rebuilt so would def rather find a complete used rear in good condition for alot cheaper. I will upgrade to a s60 down the line but just need something that will get me around for now without overpaying. located in socal. what are the prices of 10 bolts youre seeing around your areas?

4th gen’s are over 20 years old so most have cycled through the junkyards so parts like that aren’t nearly as plentiful.
pick and pull or watching for someone doing a part out will likely be your best bet if you can be patient.

What broke, it's unusual for a rear to break behind an A4.
3 channel ABS only OR 4 channel ABS and TC (traction control) ?

Agreed.

Violent wheel hop is usually about the only thing that will cause breakage with the A4 cars, but of course there are always exceptions.

You can get a performance rear in the low $2000 area I think last time I checked a few months ago. Quick Performance I think it was but there were a few out there.

save the money for an s 60 , in the mean time look for a six cylinder f body rear (no body wants em the last 3 i bought for 100 bucks each) they have no posi and drum brakes. at least mine did. just tuck up the e brake cable and hook up the brake line at the tee bleed the brakes, and go do some great one wheel burn outs. from what ive found all the six cyl f body rears are usually mint ( i dont think they made enough power to evan brake one) . my self ive blown 3 10bolt f body rears with an ls1/a4 relatively easily . and two s10 10 bolts so my track record is pretty not good.....

^^^ some 98-02 6 cylinder f-bods came with an optional performance package that contained a posi and 3.23 or 3.42 gears instead of the standard 3.08 gears.

As far as the OPs' original question, 20 years ago they were 100-125, some even free as they wanted them 'gone'. Performance shops that work on 98-02 f-bods used to be a good source for complete 'pull-outs' that were replaced with 12 bolts and 9" Fords.

Quick Performance’s 9” is $2,700 prior to shipping with their cheapest options. ABS and traction control may or may not work with it, or any aftermarket rear.
I don’t think anyone makes a “new” 10 bolt, but there are a couple of people doing remans and they run around $2k.

I wish you lived in FL. I have one out of my SS you could pick up for free. It's been sitting, but should still be good. 80K
