Default Cheaper to build or buy?

Is it cheaper to build your own block say to a 383 or just buy a Longblock from a reputable shop. I've been looking around and was wondering this. Obvious advantage to buying one is less downtime for your car. Any thoughts? Thanks.

It's always going to be cheaper to build unless you find some sick deal on a used longblock. It costs more because of the labor involved in building it. You can save by doing it yourself.

383 is expensive because I think lunati is the only company that makes it. what are you planning on doing with the car? There is not point in stroking the motor because it'll make a decent amount of power on stock cubes and then you don't have to replace the crank which is a decent amount of money.

I don't have any way of doing it myself and would rather not bother as I don't wanna spend my time messing with it. I'll probably just stay with stock cubes anyway. I've just been doing some debating over how I wanna go with the car. I may just do a stock rebuild and upgrade it some.

No, eagle also makes a stroker crank. I think the lunati is $3000? and I believe eagles price is about half of lunati. I also agree with brandon, just stick with the stock cubes you can make some decent power from just a 346. Besides you can always spray it to get more power

Hey bro a 383 is just a 4" stroke. All 402/408 motors use a 4" stroke. There are several companies that make them and they can be had for about 1k for a crank and 2 k for the whole assembly. Do some research before you post next time

Well the car is a weekend warrior. I basically drive it all weekend. Then park it during the week. I do drive it to the gym every day but thats only 3 miles roundtrip. A big consideration goes to how much can you really hook up on the street? Although its not a daily driver I don't want it to the point its just a drag car. I will take it to the track a few times a year but not every week or something. I just want a real fast, ground pounding street car thats still fun to drive with AC and cruise. What kind of power do the 402/408 make with say a good sized cam and heads? I've already got some parts. I have Fast 90/90, Pacesetters, TSP True Duals still in the box. My car has 114,000 on the clock. I'm just thinking of waiting it out and doing everything at once instead of adding parts a little at the time.
