Default Just bought an 01 ss, now what?

Just bought a 2001 SS 6-speed, with 3.42 gears. It is stock except I believe it may have Loudmouth II exhaust, but i'm not positive. I know the first mod is usually a lid, but i'm curious where you can buy the clear lid? How much should I expect to pay for a Lid/filter?

Hell it already feels "woke up" to me and it's stock lol, but yeah i figured longtubes eventually, but i'm not sure how much I feel like making it any louder at this point. I'll probably just end up buying some different rims and drag radials first after lid/catback.

Congrats on your new SS. I know what you mean about it being "woken up" and stock, haha. Mine is bone stock and it's still enough to throw me back in the seat and scare the **** out of my fiancee! I am in love with my car!! Just bought the clear MTI lid and filter for my car. Post some pics up of that beast.

instead of a regular lid, I would get the suncoast intake or the k&n FIPK kit(not the panel filter). But mine came with a lid so I just have the k&n panel

Kind of wondering your reasoning or logic for suggesting that? Usually the lid is the cheap best bang for you buck mod. FIPK is not going to gain much if anything over a lid.

the suncoast kit I'm pretty sure uses the larger panel filter from a corvette, and it also sits up higher and fits snugly into the opening in the underside of the suncoast hood, and I assume the stock ss hood, but verify that first. My lid(whisper?) doesn't seal the filter in very good, and I've heard all the aftermarket lids are like that. And/or the k&n fipk replaces the lid with a different configuration that uses a k&n cone filter, which I'm pretty sure has more area than the stock or lid panel filter for more flow.

hmmm, not finding the suncoast intake on their website, but you can look and/or call if you want, maybe they don't even make the intakes anymore? I would call, but here's the link http://www.suncoastcreations.com/index.cfm

here's the k&n fipk intake

where I saw the suncoast intake was on a guys 9 second Z28. With the advanced search, entering his name noyzee in the username search field, you can probably find pics of it. He also had one of the suncoast hoods too though, I think if you buy the suncoast hood, an option is the $300 intake filter ramair setup. I think the SS hood has the same opening though, but I'm not sure of that.

By the way, click my sig pic for more pics, I have a suncoast hood, the care came with it. But not the intake filter setup, I have a whisper lid I think, but like I said, I don't really like it. Just don't feel like shelling out $300 for the suncoast that would fit my hood so nice. Maybe if I find one on ebay a bit cheaper.

the more I think about it, the suncoast kit might not fit the ss hood.

I still dont know why the hell you are pushing FIPK or 'ram air'. He is not going to gain any horse power thats worth noting. The only thing his is going to gain is an empty wallet.

the way the sun coast works, is it is an open filter. but the hood is made to work with it, there for making it ram air, and working better then the lid. but stock ss the air comes in from the front to work with the stock radiator suport and lid.

the best thing you can do is a lid. (clear lid looks cool and will make power, but dyno testing and track testing show the slp one to make the most power i believe) it was in gmhtp magazine.

now another easy may to make more power up top is tocut out the bottom of the radiator suport to use the hole filter. then make spacers out of 1" round alum stock from home depot or somthing. make the 1" tall. put them under your radiator suport. this lifts it up allowing for more air flow.

or just order a radiator suport for a 98 ws6. they came with a bigger opening in them again helping alot in the top end mph ect.

good luck with the car

PS.
i did long tubes with off road y pipe from kooks on my budies car.

left the stock slp exhaust on it (the car was a firehawk)
it sounded great, and made great power!! very sleeper style cruzin, but opens up nice when you stand on it!!
hope this helps as well.

I wasn't trying to bust your ***** about it just wondering if there was a logical reason to have a new person spend extra money for something like that.

No harm
