Default question about 98 ls1's

i might be getting a 98 ls1 so was just wondering. I heard that the rod bolts are much weaker in the 98's. Does that mean if i get a cam and tune it a little past redline, the motor has a 90% chance of blowing? Please educate me because i dont want to regret this. It has 90k miles...

I've got a cam, a little bit more hp, and a 6500rpm rev limiter now...

if the rod bolts are gonna go, they would have gone awhile ago. I don't recommend spinning past 6500 or to 6500 too often though.

I've heard that '98s aren't even true LS1s. It's GM's bastard child. It's actually an LT1 with LS1 heads.

LOL, no it's not true. Just my attempt at some '98 owner's humor.

'98 F-bodies are great. They have some advantages and disadvantages, just like all the other years.

I still like my '98 better than my '02.

i'll suggest 01-02 if your gonna get a ls1 f-body just because they'll come with the LS6 manifold already.

They will also come with a greater chance of oil burning and piston slap.

And a weaker flexplate (auto).

And a greater chance of paint bubbles on the roof.

And a dummy temp gage.

And a cheaper rear-view mirror.

And cheaper looking/feeling seat fabric (Camaro cloth).

Not to say that '01+ don't have advantages as well, they do, but they also have negatives as I've outlined above.

Summary: There is no one perfect year.

Not all '98s feel slow.

The stock power difference from a '98 to an '02 isn't much. Certainly nothing drastic as some people tend to beleive.

i like my 98. other then that fact that gm needs to realize that speed and a crappy suspension system is a deadly mix.

wait..maybe thats why its so fun?

still working on my suspension part, nothing like NOT being able to apply the power to the damn ground...

looks like next year when I'll add in some good shocks/struts... f-in decarbon crap...

even though the 98 ls1's are powerful, it means squat because in stock form (less the ss models), the shocks give way too much letting you spin the car (stock parts), or just plain spin the tires (upgraded lca', panhard sway etc)..

I like my 02 a lot better than my 98.
With midlength headers, OR-Y, Magnaflow CB, Lid, k&n filter, descreened stock MAF, with stock gears, my 02 went 12.73@112 on street tires (2.0 60').
My 98 has way more boltons Suncoast Ram air hood w/ram air kit, LS6 MAF, k&n filter, smooth bellows, Shaner S3 TB, ported LS6 manifold, pacesetter LTs, True duals, Dynomax muffler, 4.10 gears, and a tune. the 98' has gone 13.05@107 w/2.0 60'

The WS6 and SS packages got better suspension, that little bit really helps it hook better than plain 98 cars. Power wise, they are pretty similar in output and performance, it's just a matter of addressing the weaknesses.

I think the record "bone stock" car doing 12's in the 1/4 was a 98 car...
