Junkyard Motor
I dont know if this is the right place to post this but if its not then move no hard feelings. I have a 98 z28 with 175,xxx miles. My friend got a great dohc motor for his 240sx for like 300 dollars. I know the 350 chevy small block is a golden motor but if i find one a do a compression test on it and everything goes good would this be a ok motor to due a rebuild on? I want the motor to be like brand new or better when im done with it. I dont think i have that long with the LS1 in there now so.
Thanks
Chris

personally i would rebuild ur ls1!!! its rated one of the 10 best engines for a reason! but the 350 is a excellent motor but u would be downgrading into older technology! stick with the ls1 or if u can find a used ls2 for cheap

no i want to rebuild another ls1 or ls2. Im not gonna down grade to carburated motors. I need to keep the car driveable because its a DD. I was just gonna do this for a weekend thing. Do it in my spare time sort of deal. By the way what is the compression ration for the Ls1

hey i know but Gm classifies it as a small block 350 i think. When someone asks you what you have in your car it sounds a little weird saying i have a 346.

JMO, But the 350 will work depending on yours goals such as street/track and how much power your wanting too put down..Me and a friend did the junkyard route on my ford 302 3 times and a jy350 a few times and made a best hit of 6.30's 1/8 and him always havn problems with the cylinder cracking and me splitting 2 of the jy motors in half on the block which is the weakest link imo on the Fords...JMO

Def. stick with the gen. III or IV motors. If you are on a budget just rebuild your stocker and upgrade to a slightly larger cam and the LS6 intake. If your aren't wanting to build your trans. I wouldn't go to wild with the speed parts unless you have built the trans already or have it in the budget. If the budget is not a big concern I would build a 6.0 iron block, LQ9. GMPP and other sponsers have L92 heads and the corrisponding L76 intake and a 90mm tb. With a healthy cam you will have one hell of a budget badass motor on your hands. Just my .02

All you need to buy is a new crank, rods, pistons, and bearings and your good to go.. As long as your other parts are still working .. Unless you want to change out valvetrain and all that good stuff, but if your gunna do that then you just need to go ahead and get a cam also.
