LS1 cars w/100,000 miles or more
With new and faster cars coming out, should we keep our fbody or trade it in for something new. What about parts? Tranny, engine Do we buy new trannies or LS1 engines when they go bad because the car is gettin older? Is it worth puttin all this money into these cars or just buy something new. How reliable are our cars? The LS1 is what 11 yrs old. I just want to know what everyone thinks. Is the LS1 still a respected engine, still on top or fading away.

Right now in the affordable sports car range, then yes IMO the LS1 is still on top of the game when you factor hp/tq, great reliability, easy to find parts for, and the biggest thing -PRICE! figure you could go get the new top dog LS in the GTO for atleast 18k, or even go with a brand new mustang GT right at 25-27k. the mustang is a more expensive to mod because its still the newest mustang out there, the gto has a good platform, but IRS. (not sure if the new mustang has IRS, maybe??
anyways say you had 20k to throw into a toy, then get an 01 f-body(say you get one for 10k), have the motor built up, h/c/ intake, exhaust, clutch, tune and possibly a 12 bolt upgrade for right at 20k(if your paying the labor)... you got yourself a brand new 470+ rwhp drivetrain in a great vehicle...
or...you sell what you got and lose money, find a new vehicle pay the taxes on it, get it registered and only have enough money for intake/exhaust...
unless you really want something else because your tired of it...dont get rid of it and waste your money...just my $.02

Put it this way,4 months ago i bought my 98 z28 a4 for 5 grand (100k miles, still runs great) Iv put a few hundred dollars into it, stall, lid, shift kit, new tires, and exhaust. I recently raced my friends 2005 350z, which is procharged running what he said is 12 psi, exhaust/headers/cams. Stock he paid 24 grand for his car, add a pro charger for his car? im guessing 3 grand, exhaust/head/cam, add some more money in there. Now I BEAT him, with my car that total iv paid under 6000 for, imagine if i put in the 22,000 more that he has in his car. Our cars are still the baddest things on the road for the price or not.

Hell Yes, the F-body platform is one of the best bang for your buck cars!! I bought my 98 Formula for $5500 dollars, slapped a few boltons on it(LS6 intake, LT's etc) and broke the 12's with a 126k mile car. Then I got a tune!! I did just drop 20k on an 02 Camaro SS LE but I wanted one so I got one.
My opinion on buying a car(F-Body)

you can't complain about the price of 98-00 fbodies these days...even with a 100k+ on the clock...as long as the car is taken care of, it is going to last a long time

On my 00 Formula and it runs like a champ just as good as my 00 Corvette with 75k. Also my previous Trans Am had 147,433 on it dynoed 335hp and 343 ft lbs torque. LSx's in general are great and I don't ever see myself without one. Next for me will be a 5th Gen Camaro or LS3 Vette for sure

im in high school and all my buddys would almoust kill 4 a ls1. well the 1s in my auto class would. most of the other guys that dont kno anything are crazy about riceburners. i personally hate them. theres no other car i really want and could take as much pride in than a transam or camaro

you could wait until 2009 and buy a new camaro...a good choice. but then your knee deep in financing and trying to pay for parts that will be extremely expensive (not to mention relatively untested) for a new car with IRS.

In my opinion the cars coming out these days, the mustang, charger, 350Z, ect. They are way too expensive for what you get.Charger SRT8 runs a 13.4(perfect driver, perfect day, lots of luck)stock for $45k. My 01 WS6 ran a 13.36 with an SLP lid and a free flowing exhaust and I paid 18k for it and I overpaid. If I didnt want an imaculate car I could have found one in the 13k range but instead I wanted a low mile car.
The new Camaro looks promising but expensive. The vettes are nice too but for what I have into my car you would have to pry the wheel from my cold dead fingers.

There is something about these cars that most don't get. The bang for the buck. Weather the LS1 or the LT1. The smile on your face after smoking something someone has dumped a ton of $$$ in or just drove off the lot with 72 months worth of payments. Now with that said, i'll keep my Formula. The sad part is parting with the SS someday.
As for mileage: Formula @108k . . . Camaro SS @127k

There's always going to be somebody faster than you.
I don't consider 100K miles being something to scoff at. My TA has almost 117K miles and is in top shape. 6 months ago I bought a 98 Z28 off this board for $3500 and that had 167K miles and with LT's, ORY and TD's it was running like bat out of hell.
Parts are becoming cheaper and cheaper for these things, so they are not going to go anywhere any time soon.
And not to mention the good looks. Now that is pretty hard to beat, too. There aren't too many newer inexpensive sport cars that I consider better looking than the 98+ F-body. But that's relative, of course. The beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
