i didnt read all of the posts, so i dont know where this thread is going, but heres my input.
i've daily driven my car for 3 years, it's an a4. i've gone from lid/catback 2.73 car with stock 16's getting 21-22mpg avg mostly hwy driving, fairly aggressive. i got 26.5 on the hwy at 65. now i'm 3.42 geared, stalled, getting 16-17mpg avg with 17's.
my suggestion, if you're going to DD an fbody, as much as it sucks to have to use a clutch i'd get an m6 just for gas mileage and reliability. if you're commute is 90% hwy then you will probably see the 24-26mpg avg you are looking for. for me, the m6 really would have suited my driving style alot better.

I average 19.5 MPG in my 3.23 SS. I would say driving style would fall between easy and aggressive somewhere. I know a dyno tune would really help and I'll be getting one soon. Mods in sig.

I got 27 MPG in my 2001 Z with 2.73 gears with one WOT run and that was id say 80% highway and 20% city.... mine also has a lid mid-length headers and LM2 exhaust with suspension work. without a tune.

You're probably not going to believe this, and I don't believe it either. But I filled up at 200 miles on the tank, and it went to 6.2ish gallons, I pulled the lever again and it filled to 7.1 then stopped. It sounded full too. But if that's correct, that means I got 28 mpg.
Thats with Lid, Headers, exhaust.
Just put new wires & fuel filter on. Car has also recently gotten new 02's as well.

well when my car was 2.73's, stock stall, with a lid and cat back only I did 29 mpg all highway driving. usually around 18-19 mpg in all traffic.
Now I have a 3600 stall, LT headers, 3.73 gear, just a bunch of bolt on's. I got on average 24-25 mpg on the last power tour doing around 70 mph most of the time. 15-16 mpg all in traffic on the daily drive to work. I take it easy on the car most of the time.. looking at data logs I usually do around 20-25% throttle 99% of the time and only goose the throttle in the parking garage at work. Just love the symphony of car alarms.. lol.

ok i've said this before with no takers, PLEASE any of you 30 mpg people, fill up your tank and post the milage on odometer. then drive around for a week and stop at the SAME station & pump and fill er up!. then post your milage / odometer. your gallons so WE can do the math right here on the web. i dont think any 30 mpg people are liars, they just failed math! if you get 30mpg you should get 450 miles on a tank of gas (15x30 =450)

I never drive my car to empty, because I don't know what empty is. I have broken fuel sending unit so I've been filling up at ~200ish miles. I filled up at 200, and it would only take 7.1 gallons (after it stopped at 6.3 and I held the handle again on the pump). That comes out to ~28mpg. I'm half tempted to hit up the gas station again and see how much fuel it takes. If it only takes like 4 gallons, then I know I was right.

yeah i get about 20mpg with half city half highway with getting in the throttle off and on. its bone stock other than a higher flowing muffler. A4 stock 3.23's. and its a convertible. i though about changing the 4 o2 sensors. think that will help?

My personal best was a complete highway trip from my town to Purdue... these 2 gas stations are exactly 100 miles apart. I got 32mpg. During the trip I WOT two times and reached 100mph... those were just when I had to pass people and was pissed off they were going so slow. I filled up before I left and turned off the pump when it stopped itself... I didn't trickle any extra in to get to an even $amount or whatnot. I did the exact same thing at the station at purdue, and it wasn't exactly 3.125 gallons, but it was 3.1xx even if it was 3.19 it i would be 31.34 mpg.... but i know it was much closer to 32.

2.73's suck. for acceleration anyways. isnt that why u would buy one of these cars is for acceleration??? lol ... im glad my z28 convert came with 3.23's cause i can for sure till the difference over 2.73's in past camaro's. to sum it up, 2.73's are nothing to brag about no matter what gas mileage!!!!

I had 2.73's in my rear with a big cam/stall combo, and it sucked for about 7 months before I could afford a gear swap.
AFter the 3.42's went in, the car completely changed! WOW!

No auto LS1 car is getting 30+mpg. As stated before, if you say you are getting that, you failed math.
I have a bone stock 99 Firehawk Formula and I get 21-22 mpg all highway. About 230-250 a tank. That's why I bought a Camry as a DD. 420+ miles a tank, and I get about 32mpg.
My previous car was a full bolt-on 98 Trans Am M6 and I was able to get 31mpg all highway at 75mph. About 410-420 miles on a tank. before I installed LT's/ORY I got about 27mpg all highway.

Just becuase YOUR car didn't perform to standards doesn't mean that it isn't possible for others.
I proved it with a trip from San Antonio to Fort Worth it's about 250 miles, and I put 8 gallons upon fill up when I stopped to see what the gas milage is. By MY math, that's 31.25MPG.
It IS possible, however, certain conditions must be met:
1. Road surface/outside temperature
2. Staying at one speed, seems the LS1 perfect gas mileage speed is 55-60MPH.
3. Cruise control is better than your foot
4. 2.73 gears help.
If these conditions are met, it is QUITE probable that you will get good gas mileage from a BONE STOCK LS1 with an A4 w/2.73 gears (they are called HIGHWAY gears for a reason).
And we are talking 30+MPG
If you do constant high revs, passes of other people that require shift into OD, then the gas mileage will significantly decrease.
FACT, no opinion.
