Default Best air filter choice

What is the difference between the Fram air hog filter vs. the K&N filter. I can get the fram for $30 less. Is there really any difference???? Thanks

ehhh... just get a paper filter. if the 2-3 extra hp is really worth it to you go with the K&N. it's probably a better made filter

I gave up on the oiled filters, maybe i was overoiling them or something but my MAF wires kept getting crudded up with gunk from that oil coming off the filter. No problems since I went back to paper. Never saw any difference at the track.

+1 for paper. No gains from fancy air filters.

Over time the K&N will save you money because you will never own the car long enough to replace it. I have always used K&N filters and never had an issue with the maf getting oiled.

This is a description of the Fram Air Hog I found:

FRAM AIR HOG PERFORMANCE FILTER, DELIVERS POWERFUL PERFORMANCE, LONG FILTER LIFE -- Rectangular Panel High Performance Air Filter, Increases Airflow And Power, Are Washable And Reusable, Precision Cotton Fiber And Metal Mesh Filter Media Outlasts Paper Filters By Up To 20 Times Longer

Best filter choice is paper, IMO.

I use Fram paper in all my cars.

+1 on my old grand prix i had an oiled filter that did the same thing so it kept tripping my check engine light, i agree with the saying every little bit helps, but personaly i think air filter type doesnt really matter. between the two i would go with the cheaper one so if it starts messing up your maf you can go back to paper and not lose as much $.

Just got rid of my 2 K&N's i had used for years. They only outflow paper when they are completely clean and when you have a SSRA or FTRA they get dirty super fast. Paper is the best choice

If you want an expensive, reuseable filter, go with the one from Amsoil.

It's supposed to filter better than K&N, and it doesn't require any oil, so all you have to do to clean it is basically shake it out. And it's the same price, if not a little cheaper.

I don't think K&N is all that great a product, they just have a great marketing team.

Paper filter.

I just trashed my holly powershot.

Personally, the ONLY reason I would see for getting one of the reusable ones would be if you had a clear LID and wanted something colorful to look at.

You're only supposed to spray the oil on the UNDER side of the filter where the air enters at, not the side closer to the maf!

The question has been beaten to death. Just search and you'll find good arguments on both ends. Myself, I stick with the K&N because I can wait longer periods of time before tending to it (I drive over 12k miles a year) and it's an easy job to clean and re-oil instead of buying a new one. Either will work just fine though.

Cleaning and re-oiling is not easy compared to buying a new paper filter.

Paper: Better filtration, less mess, less work.
