I've had the SS for a few months now and I just have to say it: I was expecting more. It just doesnt feel that fast, I mean the car should at least run 12's but I thought that a 12 sec car would feel faster than it does. I guess its just time to get off my *** and put on the nitrous kit that has been sitting in my room for a few weeks.

I don't know **** about A4s, but from what I read on the sight, it would probably help to put some type of stall in and maybe a steeper gear.

I know the car can run the number. I have ran a local guy with a cammed stalled LT1 putting over 350rwhp and 400 rwtq and pulled him up top. He did a 13.2 before the cam

 

maybe your just used to it..when i did H/C in my old Z,it felt fast as hell..after a few months of driving,it felt like nothing special..you always want more!

 

LS1's are smooth and effortless feeling engines so they dont feel as fast as they really are. Most other cars have to work so hard to go the equivalent speeds so the sensation of speed is much higher.

 

No, not at all. The car is fast. This just means you got used to it and want to go faster just like 95% of the people on this board.

 

Get it on the Dyno to se if everything is ok. Stall & gears really wake up the auto's.

It's the A4. Mine feels slow too. I know it's not, it just feels that way. I used to have a '98 M6, and that thing felt WAY faster than my A4.

To the original poster, my T/A is stock internals, LT's ory, borla catback, 3.42's trans go shift kit and vig 3200 stall. It feels nice and snappy up to 100mph or so but I do need more power. Never had it dyno'd but needs one bad, car use to have 1.8 rockers and 93 instead of shitty 91 right now and is missing. One single shitty pass of 13.2 jsut flooring it. I know its got high 12's easy and mid's with a cam. If I put it on the bottle no probs for low 12's maybe even high 11's with some traction and a good 60'. Guess I'll never know b/c I am going with a complete different setup in spring and this stocker will never fire again. 370, turbo, etc, etc here I come low 10's high 9's Ya the M6's do feel faster even though in a race most cases they are indeed slower. My buddy with a full bolt on, heads and cam ls1 has pulled a best of 12.5 or something. Thats with nitto's though, he's getting mickey now. MS3 making 430rwhp and I am sure I could beat him with some good traction as I am now. Fore surely cam only anyways.

i used to run a 92 5.0 5 speed LX and it mopped up on the streets in the early
90s. and they arent nothin compared to an LT1 less yet an LS1.

even chevy said it " factory performance of the late 80s and early 90s was spelled in three words....five point oh" superchevy mag 1995.

my 5.0 was a 14.3 car and it felt fast,my 98 Z A4 runs 13.5-13.6 stock with 2.73s and just like you said...it feels like its not goin fast. thats technology for ya.

 

The torque curve of the LS1 is very deceptive, it gives you 85% of it's full torque starting at 2500 and doesn't let up until almost 6k. Basically it's flat. Even getting to that 2500, the rise in torque is quite linear. It basically lulls you into acceleration kind of like the way a plane takes off.

If you take the LT1 as an example of a typical muscle car curve, it'll peak early and drop hard after the 3500rpm range. It peaks around 2500-3k so you get a hell of a lot of low end torque that gives you that early neck snapping feel.

When I got my LS1, my experience with driving stick cars pretty much had me going with feel, when you feel the power is dying off, you usually shift. Well I got tricked by my LS1 the first few times I did that as I bounced off the limiter. Before you know it, you'll be in arrest me speed territory with the LS1.

 

funny how when you run 14.50, 13's would be awesome
then you hit 13.8 and you're like ****, I'm not far off 12.9
run 12.7, "man, nitrous would put me in high 11's"

It is a disease. Kinda like an std, sucks to live with but fun to get.

 

12s really isn't that fast at all, these days. All it took to get into the 12s in my old WS6 was a 3500 stall, an air lid, and a flowmaster muffler (muffler probably did nothing for power). I ran a 12.6 at just under 107mph like that, on 275mm BFG DRs.

12.6 was quick at the time, but the only reason it ran that fast wasn't due to power but launch. My 60 foot was 1.6x. If you look at that MPH though, there wasn't a lot of HP there. 106-107mph is usually in the 13.3-13.4 ET range without a stall. Basically, after an amazing launch, the car had nothing else to give that felt any quicker than that neck snapping initial jump. Everything afterwards felt very slow. In those days I remember going down the track just kinda waiting for it to be over by the end. LOL.

On the other side of things, if you've got a car running 12.6 @120mph, that car is going to keep you much more entertained throughout the duration of a WOT pass. Obviously lots more power there, plus if the best pass you can make is a 12.6 with that much power, then your 60-foot probably sucks. So the launch feels weak, but the further you go the faster and faster it feels as you start to get traction.

I've been out of the racing scene since 2004 though. I sold off my modded LS1 and went back to a stock LS1. A mid-13 second car is fine for cruising and makes enough power to have a little fun, but you're gonna need a lot more than a stock LS1 car if you want to win races these days.

 

i agree with the above poster. 12's unfortinatelly isnt **** now days. To be honest, neither is 11's to todays standards. 11's to me are fairly quick for a street car, but there are many many out there running much much faster. OH, also for your car feeling slow, they dont call the a4 a slush box for no reason........

 

M6s are deceptive. They feel a lot faster than they actually are. Stock for stock they are only a tad faster than the A4s on average, yet they feel MUCH faster when you're in it.

 

When you're going up a steep hill sometime, find a good gear and just mash the pedal. It feels amazing to accelerate hard in my car, when going up a steep hill.

But yeah, i'm used to my car as well, and I feel it's getting slower the more I drive.

 

Honestly I agree...its the trans. I have an 01 WS6 M6 and has been fast to me since I got it. Now im getting more used to it and it feels slower but it is just as fast. Then I drive my parents 01 SS A4 and I asked them what was wrong with it cause it was slow as hell. I have been told that stock for stock the M6 will do 0-60 in 5.2 and the A4 will do it in 6.0. Not sure if its true but after driving the A4 I know I was a bit dissapointed.

Dont blame the LS1 man!I myself couldnt imagine a better engine...unless it were bigger
