Where? In the cylinder? The dealer can make another using your VIN.

Do I want to know how you managed to do that?

Do you have your spare set?

About $30 at the dealership. They will ask you proof of ownership when you go in and ask VIN number.

Peace,
Craig.

That's about the going rate for dealer keys. Or if you have VATS disabled through the PCM any hardware store cut key will do.

A key doesn't need to be programmed. Just the FOB and even that can be done on your own. The key simply has a resistor on it that the PCM checks for if it is correct. Once you show VIN and proof of insurance the correct resistance value can be chosen and cut.

How the hell do you break a key when it isn't in the ignition?

No you do not, they just need the VIN and I guess insurance like SladeX mentioned.

About four years ago when I bought my T/A used it only came with one set of keys. All they asked for was my VIN, and that was it. $30 dollars or so later I had another key.

Peace,
Craig.

since finding out that some dealerships will cut a key with only the vin number, I've gone and covered my vin on the window. I suggest a lot of you do that and keep a copy of your stuff at home.

No, that was 4 years ago. I just called Monument Chevrolet where I went and asked them. You must have title or registration and person on that title or registration must be present.

Peace,
Craig.

I recently had a bowling teammate toss my keys in his wifes purse. Guy had too much to drink.

Anyway, I was about to drive to the stealership to get new ones made since I couldn't find my spare set, when he called to let me know.

I called the dealer prior and was quoted 6$ for a door key, $28 for the ignition, and a $50 charge for them to get the stuff from GM to program it.

I need a back up set made. I hope they don't plan to charge that $50 fee.

No programming is required for a VATS key, period. Anyone who charges you to program anything is ripping you off. Take your broken key to a locksmith if you have the key portion of it (the black head of the key is irrelevant), and they can set you up pretty cheap.

I had 2 extras made. I did not have to drive to the dealer, just VIN and prrof of ownership, I believe it was like $30-$35 a key because of the chip thing...

Hey.... Dont complain.. Before i got smart and traded my 05 GTO M6, I only had one key- and to go through the dealer - The key was 250 bucks... And took 4 months before i got it - had to send it to australia for special 2 sided cut- then sent it back- then get a key fob (65) from another dealer- and the key itsself was 45 dollars.. the rest was in shipping- and in getting the key cut was 70 bucks.. Stupid GTO... ( i made them include it when i bought the car) lol
